US says Chinese destroyer came dangerously close to US ship

  • The USS Decatur was approached by a Chinese warship close to the disputed Spratly Islands

Two Chinese J-11 fighters flew within about 15 metres of a US EP-3 Aries aircraft over the South China Sea, forcing the US pilot to descend sharply to avoid a collision, according to officials at the Pentagon, the US Department of Defence.

That doesn't work for China, who sent one of their own destroyers to intercept the American ship, which was just 12 nautical miles off the Spratly Islands.

The confrontation occurred Sunday, as the guided-missile destroyer USS Decatur was conducting what the US calls "freedom of navigation operations" (FONOPs) near a Chinese-held man-made islet in the Spratly chain of the strategic waterway.

But according to the US, the Chinese Luyang destroyer approached the Decatur in "an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver" that required evasive actions.

US Commander Nat Christensen said that the "Luyang approached within 45 yards [41m] of Decatur's bow". Chinese officials rescinded the invitation, the USA official said.

The U.S. Navy routinely undertakes FONOP missions worldwide to challenge excessive territorial claims of global shipping lanes.

China's defense ministry accused the United States of traveling near islands claimed by Beijing and ordered its ship to force the Decatur away from the Spratly Islands.

In his annual address to the U.N. General Assembly, Trump said China's trade policies "cannot be tolerated" anymore.

US, China look on as Putin seeks India arms deals
Moscow is also pushing for India's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group of countries controlling access to nuclear technology. More than 20 agreements are expected to be signed during Putin's visit in areas such as defence, space and economy.

A Chinese destroyer ventured within 45 yards of a U.S. Navy ship sailing near disputed islands in the South China Sea on Sunday, undertaking what one U.S. official called "an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver" and one likely to ratchet up tensions in the region. A US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Mattis was no longer going to China.

The close encounter with the Chinese warship occurred as the American destroyer was carrying out a freedom of navigation operation (FONOPs) in the Spratlys, the USA said.

"Our forces will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere global law allows", Captain Brown said in a statement.

China frequently challenges US ships and aircraft passing through parts of the South China Sea, sometimes with radio warnings, but at other times by using harassing maneuvers.

This incident comes amid increasing tension between China and the US. When the U.S. destroyer approached one of the Gaven Reefs near the disputed islands, China dispatched a Luyang-class destroyer to escort the American warship away.

China has not yet commented on the matter.

The movement of the United States naval ships and aircraft through the area has increased since President Donald Trump took the office.

Beijing last month refused a USA warship entry to Hong Kong, and its top naval officer canceled a high-level meeting with his US counterpart.
