Google celebrates 20 years of search

  • Google introduces new 'Discover' feature as Search turns 20

And it's doubling down on visual.

Google has done some changes to update its Search Engine. "Now, there are hundreds of billions of pages". Users can also opt-in to a feature called "activity card", which lets them see pages they have visited and questions they have asked about a particular topic.

"Information and language are core to what we are as human beings", Gomes said. "So if you're looking to buy a specific pair of shoes, a product page dedicated to that pair of shoes will be prioritized above, say, a category page showing a range of shoe styles", Google says.

Its first Doodle was created before the company was even incorporated.

Google also said the company would now do a better job of suggesting videos to illustrate what you're searching for.

Arsenal boss Emery happy with 2-goal Welbeck: Contract talks?
When he's playing with a performance like today, he's helping the team. Our first half was very good because our pressing was very good.

What's particularly interesting is the links to other search engines at the bottom of the search results. You'll be shown similar cards when you search for a new hobby or activity for a long time. Now called Discover, it has more granular controls over content that appears, and new topic headings that explain why you're seeing what you're seeing.

Second, these days, tech companies want to anticipate our needs - and searches. Today, as part of its efforts to improve search, the search giant is revamping Feed and is renaming it to Discover. Interestingly, the majority of the changes seem slated to appear within Google's mobile app. One of the new features are activity cards: when the user re-scans the search query from the past, then Google will display the previous steps in the search results. In the future, Google will know you even more intimately, combining search results, browsing history and location tracking with biophysical health data from wearables and other sources that could offer powerful insights into your state of mind. It is also doubling down on visual stories in mobile.

Google reps told me they're rolling this feature out very slowly, and that while the results are algorithmic, Google will keep an eye on them.

Discover can be found inside the Google app for Android, and in a special pane to the left of the leftmost home screen on Pixels, Android One devices, and Sony smartphones.

Since the humble beginning as a university project to the forefront of technological innovation, Google has also extended its roots into the physical world and invested millions into wind farms in North Dakota. For example, the company is using artificial intelligence - which is key to much of its search efforts - and is working with government agencies in India to help send flood alerts to the public that include crucial information such as when, where and severity of flooding.
