A beluga in the Thames, actually.

A whale, believed to be a beluga, has been seen in the River Thames, marine life rescuers have said.

Ecologist Dave Andrews tweeted footage of the marine mammal, which he said was swimming in the river off Coalhouse Fort, Essex.

Known as the "canary of the sea" due to their chirps, clicks and whistles, beluga whales can range from 13 ft to 20 ft in length and have distinctive round foreheads, known as "melons".

"Nobody tell my boss I'm now watching a live feed of a river", one person joked on Twitter.

A "very lost" beluga whalespotted in the Thames on Tuesday has been sighted again.

As excitement around the beluga sighting peaked, many wondered just how the whale ended up in the Thames. "They are rarely seen in United Kingdom waters", said Sarah Dolman, a senior policy officer with Whale and Dolphin Conservation. Belugas are social creatures and tend to swim in groups of ten or more.

He urged people to give the whale "space and minimise disturbance".

However rescue teams were on standby in case the animal, which is normally found thousands of miles away in the Arctic, gets into danger.

Mr Groves said it was not the first time a beluga has been spotted in United Kingdom waters in recent years. In January 2006, a northern bottlenose whale caused a splash after being spotted by a man on a train.

"Hopefully instinct will soon kick in and the beluga will leave the estuary and go out into the north sea and then head north where it should be", the scientist explained. It died, after suffering from convulsions, near Gravesend as the barge rushed towards the open sea.
