Kavanaugh's prep school pal: Ford's wrong, I was never at party

  • WHAT TOOK HER SO LONG? U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein seen at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last Thursday first heard from Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser in July

One of the first criticisms Senate Republicans had of the allegation that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh committed sexual assault at age 17 was to ask why Democrats had waited until the last minute to take any action on the letter, despite having it for weeks.

"I don't think the Federal Bureau of Investigation should be involved because they don't want to be involved", Trump told reporters at the White House.

Mr Trump was answering reporters' questions about Mr Kavanaugh, whose nomination is now in jeopardy in the Senate, as he left to visit hurricane-ravaged areas in North Carolina and SC.

Still, the attorney said Ford does not regret bringing the allegation, which has put Kavanaugh's confirmation process for the supreme court in doubt.

"She has nothing to gain from this except a clear conscience, which is a very powerful thing", said Samantha Guerry.

"I feel so badly for him that he's going through this, to be honest with you", the Republican president told a news conference.

Third strawberry brand recalled amid new threats
The Queensland Police Service said it was investigating the contamination relating to sewing needles inserted in strawberries. Meanwhile, a NSW mother revealed her ten-year-old child discovered sabotaged fruit in a case yet unconfirmed by police.

"I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the Committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity", he said in the statement.

"If she shows up, that would be wonderful", Trump said. "If she doesn't show up that would be unfortunate", Mr. Trump said. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) told Politico's Off Message podcast, echoing an argument Republicans made in 2016 when they held up former president Barack Obama's nominee for an open seat until after Trump won the election and nominated someone else. But Hill said it was really a question about the conditions of Ford's testimony are "actually tenable". However, he also said that he reached out to Ford "three or four times" and had not received a response.

Republicans had also displayed no willingness to delay a Judiciary panel vote that Grassley had planned for this Thursday to advance the nomination, setting the stage for full Senate confirmation of Kavanaugh by month's end, in time for the new Supreme Court session. "As a result of these kind of threats, her family was forced to relocate out of their home", they wrote in a letter to Senate judiciary committee chairman Chuck Grassley. Patrick J. Smyth sent a letter to Grassley and top committee Democrat Dianne Feinstein, denying seeing any "improper conduct" by Kavanaugh, a classmate at Georgetown Preparatory School, according to CNN, which obtained a copy of the letter. "This is not a man that deserves this".

A spokesman for the police department in Montgomery County, Maryland, site of the alleged incident, said it has no investigation ongoing.

Almost 600 women who attended the school have written a letter of support for Ford, published on Tuesday.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6 elections, when congressional control will be at stake. There is a hearing scheduled for Monday although Ford has asked the FBI to investigate Kavanaugh before she testifies.
