Scotland's 'danger to life' warning from Met Office over tropical storm

Weather watchers will have their eyes on the skies in the coming days as Hurricane Helene creeps closer to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible".

Met Office bosses have even warned of heavy waves in coastal areas, with the potential for injuries as the sea pulls up items from beaches.

"The strongest of the winds will arrive on Monday afternoon and evening, with the peak intensity likely to occur around 20:00 along the south coast, before transferring to remaining locations between 21:00 and 02:00 on Tuesday morning".

The warning means there could be damage to trees, with the possibility of large branches falling, and 'some disruption to transport'.

An estimated 2,975 people died in the Category 4 storm's aftermath when medical resources were strained beyond the breaking point. Roy Cooper and Wilmington, North Carolina, Mayor Bill Saffo to "just (let) them know, we know how it feels".

"By the time it reaches the United Kingdom we're looking at potential for 40 to 50mph gusts, with isolated chances of 55 to 60 miles per hour gusts on exposed high ground or coastal areas", Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxi told i.

Met Office meteorologist Alan Deakin said: "Hurricane Helene may influence things in combination with an area of low pressure over the coming days".

Devon and Cornwall, parts of Wales and County Down in Northern Ireland as well as Northumbria, Cumbria and parts of Yorkshire in north of England are likely to see strong winds. Meanwhile, in some Irish Sea coastal areas, most likely in Wales and North West England, gusts to 55 to 65mph are likely with possible isolated gusts in excess of 70mph in the most exposed places.

Tomorrow is forecast to start off dry and bright, becoming cloudy with rain showers and strengthening winds as the day goes on.

"It looks like Helene will move towards Ireland on Tuesday morning".
