Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge sets world record at Berlin marathon

With weather conditions flawless and virtually no wind, it was clear after the opening few kilometres that Kipchoge's only opponent would be the clock and his three pacemakers were pushed to the limit to keep the tempo high as Kipchoge dipped well below world-record time by the halfway mark.
Kipchoge has won 10 of the 11 marathons he's run.
The 33-year-old Olympic champion, aided by a string of pacemakers through to 25km of the 42.195km race, took 1min 18sec off the previous best set four years ago by Dennis Kimetto.
"I woke up knowing I'd break the World record and maybe even run 2:01 and that's what I've done".
"I lack the words to describe how I feel", Kipchoge said, according to CNN.
Kipchoge, who previous year took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran two hours and 25 seconds with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers, started off at a sizzling pace.

He started with a sizzling pace and quickly shook off his biggest opponent, Wilson Kipsang, to make it a one-man race.
On Sunday his three pacemakers were pushed to the limit to keep the tempo high as Kipchoge dipped well below world record time at the halfway mark.
Kipchoge is regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time. "@EliudKipchoge is a monster congrats champ I will live to remember this day it will take a generation to see another run like that", former Boston Marathon champion Wesley Korir added on Twitter.
Berlin debutant Amos Kipruto came second in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 23 seconds, followed by a third Kenyan, former world-record holder Wilson Kipsang, with 2 hours, six minutes and 48 seconds.
In the women's race, Kenya's Gladys Cherono smashed her personal best to claim her third straight Berlin Marathon victory in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 11 seconds, becoming the fourth quickest woman in the history of women's marathon. He ran solo for the last 17 kilometres of the race after his pacemakers dropped out much earlier than expected.
