Google to shut down Inbox app in March 2019

  • Google’s mailing app ‘Inbox’ to discontinue from March 2019

Gmail also gets more than one billion monthly active users as of 2018 - quite a bit more than all other webmail platforms combined - so even with Google's marketing dollars, Inbox had a challenging road ahead of it from the beginning.

Inbox began as an email experiment almost four years ago for Google. "As a result, we're planning to focus exclusively on Gmail and say goodbye to "Inbox" at the end of March 2019", Matthew Izatt, Product Manager at Gmail, wrote in a blog post late on Wednesday. Inbox marked a clear departure from the aging design of Gmail, and focused on a mobile-first experience. The company launched a new interface for Gmail this year which introduced several Inbox features.

Google launched Inbox while it still tried to make Gmail better, but not as an alternative to the latter.

New York Jets Andre Roberts' tightrope touchdown against Detroit Lions
Detroit did a lot to try to shore up the running game this offseason, drafting Kerryon Johnson and adding LeGarrette Blount . Darron Lee returned an interception for a touchdown, and Andre Roberts scored on a 78-yard punt return 67 seconds later.

Google suggests users start using Gmail again which now features most of the tools originally found in Inbox. Google was pretty adamant about the future of Inbox saying at that time that there's no reason users should be anxious, as the app is here to stay. The company claimed that it had no plans to change its email client and saw it as a place to continue testing innovative features.

The impact: This means that for those that use Inbox for their email, they'll need to look elsewhere to deal with email. Google has not revealed the exact date of the shut down but it has created a transition guide to help the users of Inbox shift to Gmail.

In a way, Inbox served as a testbed for future Gmail features. In the new Gmail, you'll find workflows that are similar to your favourite ones in Inbox. However, there is a pretty big following for Inbox, so Google may face some backlash here. Let us know in the comment section below.
