Hurricane Florence looks absolutely wild from the International Space Station

  • Florence expected to become a 'major hurricane' as it heads to US

"NOAA Hurricane Hunter plane investigating Florence found that its winds had increased to 130 miles per hour late Monday morning", said The Weather Channel.

A tracker map from the center on Monday forecast the hurricane making landfall in the Carolinas Thursday morning, and expected the storm to continue through Saturday morning, when it will have weakened to a tropical depression.

As of noon ET Monday, Florence was moving at 13 mph, some 575 miles south-southeast of Bermuda the hurricane center said.

Florence's centre was expected to move over the Atlantic Ocean between the Bahamas and Bermuda on Tuesday and Wednesday before approaching North and SC on Thursday. The move will allow the state to use the National Guard for preparations and recovery if necessary. The first was in 1901 that hit south Florida, and the second in 1933 that hit North Carolina and Virginia.

"Florence is quickly becoming a powerful hurricane", hurricane specialist Eric Blake wrote.

Florence could bring a deadly coastal storm surge, and inland flooding as far north as Virginia, the NHC said. On the other end of the spectrum, this storm will be a prolonged heavy rain event as the system starts to slow down after landfall.

Acknowledging that it's "too soon" to know the storm's exact path, Northam mentioned that all models show Virginia will see significant impact.

Gov. Rick Scott released a statement on Monday urging Floridians to be prepared for the unexpected and remain on alert about Hurricane Florence.

Florence is the third hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, after Hurricane Chris (Category 1) and Hurricane Beryl (Category 2), which formed in early July but didn't make landfall.

If Hurricane Florence lands as a powerhouse Category 4 storm along the East Coast later this week, the damage could be extensive - and long-lasting. Locations that have been directly hit by a category 4 hurricane in the past have been uninhabitable for weeks.

Food, bottled water, flashlight batteries and plywood flew off the shelves at stores throughout the mid-Atlantic, and in coastal Charleston, SC, city officials were handing out sandbags to residents.

"We are preparing for the worst and of course hoping for the best".

Earlier Monday, coastal communities in North Carolina ordered evacuations, and SC ordered evacuations for its entire coastline.

There have been six tropical storms in the Atlantic basin this year.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper's office said Florence is already being felt along the state's coast, with large sea swells resulting in life-threatening rip currents and surf.
