North Korea spotlights economic development, not nuclear might, as it turns 70

  • N Korea holds military parade without advanced missiles

Taking to Twitter to celebrate, Trump quoted a Fox News statement that North Korea passed on showing the missiles this year to demonstrate to him "its commitment to denuclearize", something which has been highly suspect at best.

This is the first stop in his maiden tour of Asia since being tapped as President Trump's special envoy for North Korea.

US President Donald Trump has hailed the absence of ballistic missiles at the military parade held by the North Korean government on the 70th anniversary of the country's founding.

Foreign dignitaries are even expected to attend - including Chinese president Xi Jinping's righthand man Li Zhanshu.

The combining of military and civilian sections is a familiar North Korean parade format.

But in his talks with envoys of South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday in Pyongyang, Kim voiced hope that denuclearisation of the peninsula will take place during Trump's current term in office through January 2021, according to Seoul.

With tensions once again on the rise, a parade featuring the very missiles that so unnerved Mr Trump past year - and led to a unsafe volley of insults from both leaders - could have been seen as a deliberate provocation.

North Korea holds military parades nearly every year and held one just before the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February.

Afterwards Kim and Li saluted the cheering crowd, the North Korean raising his guest's hand into the air.

But that imagery was balanced with flowers and colored balloons, floats on the economy and unification, and spectators waving flags of a unified Korea, Reuters reported.

For a long time, the U.S. and North Korea were at an apparent impasse, with the USA asking for a comprehensive list of North Korea's nuclear facilities, and Pyongyang demanding a formal end to the Korean War.

At present, DPRK's socialist construction has taken on a new look in various fields as the country concentrates on the economic development and improvement of people's livelihood under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, Xi said.

Another major theme was the reunification of the Korean Peninsula, carved into two by the Soviet Union and the United States after World War II.

The trip comes at an important time as many anticipate positive developments in denuclearization talks between Pyongyang and Washington from here on.

Kim Yong Nam, head of North Korea's parliament, set the relatively softer tone for the event with an opening speech that emphasized the economic goals of the regime, not its nuclear might.

North Korea's alleged new missile would also be able to launch satellites into space - something Kim last did back in February 2016.

North Korea's state-run media published Friday what it said was an "indictment" by its South Korean wing, denouncing USA forces on the peninsula and calling their withdrawal "the irresistible trend of the times".

"It's favorable to both of them, but especially to North Korea", said Choo Jaewoo, a professor of Chinese foreign policy at Kyung Hee University.

This year's celebration also marks a return of North Korea's Mass Games, which involve tens of thousands of people dancing in unison in a display of national unity. He claims to have perfected his nuclear arsenal enough to deter United States aggression and devote his resources to raising the standard of living.

The North Korean leader and Mr Trump appeared to strike a deal to denuclearise the Korena peninsula earlier this year.
