Former US presidential advisor sentenced to 14 days in prison

George Papadopoulos, the former foreign policy adviser to President Donald Trump's campaign whose suspicious conversations triggered the Russian Federation investigation, was sentenced on Friday to 14 days and one year of supervised release.

Papadopoulos received a 14-day jail sentence and 200 hours of community service on Friday for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with Russian intermediaries before the 2016 election.

Papadopoulos admitted that he lied to FBI investigators when they interviewed him on January 27, 2017.

In his time with the Trump campaign, the delicacy of Papadopoulos's mission to broker a meeting between Trump and Putin was not always reflected in his conduct.

However, Friday's sentence was much lesser than the six months the prosecution had requested for Papadopoulos, The Guardian reported.

He also received a year of supervision, 200 hours of community service, and a $9,500 fine. He was the first known Trump campaign official to cooperate with the special counsel into possible conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

"I think that if we're going to meet it's got to be a fair meeting", Trump told reporters on board Air Force One.

"People point and snicker and I am terribly depressed", he said.

During his sentencing hearing Papadopoulos said his case should serve as a warning to others.

While this chapter of the Mueller investigation concludes for Papadopoulos, his testimony and information he provided as part of his plea deal could mean trouble for others in Trump's circle, including Mr. Trump himself.

According to Bloomberg News, the committee indicated that an investigator had been used to find Mifsud, who had disappeared for months, and was told the Maltese professor may be dead. And, the prosecutors add, Papadopoulos has been hard for them to handle since he was arrested in July 2017.

United States investigators were only alerted to Papadopoulos's activities in mid-2016 after he told Australia's ambassador to London, Alexander Downer, about his talks with Mifsud during a late-night drinking session in a London pub.

But in a pre-sentencing filing last week, Papadopoulos's lawyers presented a different account, saying that candidate Trump "nodded with approval and deferred to Mr. Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it".

Papadopoulos, who served as a foreign policy adviser to Trump's campaign, has been a central figure in the Russian Federation investigation dating back before Mueller's May 2017 appointment.

"We don't talk politics", he said.

With the sentence, the young man whom Trump administration officials called a "coffee boy" and whose family members have argued is caught in a spy conspiracy will become the first Trump campaign affiliate to have his criminal case reach its completion in the court system.

At another point, Breen talked about going to the Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Chicago in February 2017 and seeing a picture of Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on the wall.
