  • Stephens targets redemption in Asia after US Open defeat

It was too much of the match played in the shadows of an afternoon on court which reaked havoc on the two players.

"I hope that I can go to Asia and win some more matches and hopefully make the year end and hopefully keep going as far as I can".

Now she's aiming for a strong finish to the year. But having returned to tennis in 2015, Sevastova has risen steadily through the ranks and is now ranked No 18 in the world.

"I think you need some time to look at the journey - it was an incredible journey these three to four years", she added.

"But now, obviously when you win more you have higher goals".

"In the end it's wonderful, you can't believe it".

Throughout the match Stephens complained about the heat and there were some questions as to whether or not the players should have stayed on.

Williams reached her 36th Grand Slam semifinal and her 12th at Flushing Meadows, where she is a six-time champion. It'll be a rematch of last year's U.S. Open quarterfinal, won by in a third-set tiebreaker.

Sevastova is one of the wiliest players on tour, mixing up slices, spins and angles and generally making life very uncomfortable for a player like Stephens who feeds off consistency of pace.

Alonso was also involved in both the goals for the Blues against Newcastle United at St James Park on Sunday. Former Chelsea FC manager Gullit believes the Blues can ill-afford to lose their prized asset.

Stephens would finally collect a break on her eighth opportunity, when Sevastova sent a forehand wide, serving at 2-0, 30-40 in the second set.

Stephens said that despite the manner of her defeat on Tuesday she was content with what she had achieved at this tournament. Stephens clawed back to 4-3 and had chances to level up but Sevastova's drop shots caught her off guard time and again and a particularly devilish one presented her with the chance to serve for the match. It was Stephens through who seemed to have gotten the worst of the distraction.

"I just really couldn't get anything to connect".

"But anyway it's a good stat, it's something positive, it's something that shows I've been competitive on all surfaces in practically all the weeks I've played this year, and I'm happy about it".

Stephens gave credit to her opponent, Sevastova saying "It's hard match and I though she played solid today and obviously the better player won".

"Look, I'm not playing the best tennis this year, but somehow on the Grand Slam, I was just able to find my mentality was working", she said.

"Defending a title isn't defending".

"I can be proud of a lot of things that happened the last couple, the matches that I played, so I'm not going to dwell on it".
