At 5 p.m. ET, Gordon, with top sustained winds of 50 mph, was about 50 miles west-southwest of Fort Myers, Florida, and was moving west-northwest at 17 mph.

Gordon became a tropical storm Monday near the Florida Keys, so residents and businesses rushed preparations Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall Tuesday near the border of MS and Alabama.

The last hurricane to strike the USA was Nate in October, coming ashore in Biloxi with 75 miles per hour (120 kph) winds.

Meanwhile, a lot of the country is facing heavy rain and flooding this Labor Day - especially Kansas. Beachgoers in the area were warned Wednesday of risky rip currents that prompted red-flag warnings, meaning it was illegal to enter the Gulf of Mexico. Flash flood watches stretched from the Florida panhandle, through parts of southwest Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa and IL.

As Florence spun in the open ocean, Tropical Storm Gordon approached the Gulf Coast after drenching parts of Florida.

It promised more of the same on a forecast track expected to take it northeast into Arkansas, which was forecast to get heavy rain from the system by Wednesday night.

N.H. Reports First Death from Legionnaires' Disease in Hampton
It can not be contracted by drinking or coming into physical contact with water containing the bacteria (such as while swimming). The symptoms are similar to general pneumonia, which includes cough, fever, headaches, muscle ache, and shortness of breath.

Hurricane and storm surge warnings are in effect for George, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone, and counties.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a voluntary evacuation notice for areas outside of the New Orleans levee system ahead of Tropical Storm Gordon. The warning means there is danger of life-threatening inundation. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other unsafe conditions.

Governors in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana had all declared states of emergency to better mobilize state resources and National Guard troops for the storm.

"We are happy to report that hotels, casinos, attractions and restaurants have resumed business as usual", Milton Segarra, CEO of the tourism organization Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast, said in a Wednesday news release.

Tropical Storm Gordon is the Atlantic basin's seventh named storm of the year.

NHC forecasters say that a westward-northwestward to northwestward motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected over the next few days. "Evacuate immediately away from coastal storm surges if instructed by local officials".

A storm surge warning is in effect for Biloxi, Mississippi, to Dauphin Island.
