  • Burt Reynolds dies at the age of 82

Actor Burt Reynolds died Thursday of a heart attack at age 82, Shepard Smith reported.

An action star who did many of his own stunts, Reynolds was also a charismatic rogue and relentless flirt on-screen, helping to make one of the biggest sex symbols of his time.

His manager confirms to US Weekly that the "Smokey And The Bandit" star went into a cardiac arrest at a Florida hospital on September 6 and passed away with his family by his side. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2019. Reynolds also checked into a drug rehab clinic in 2009.

In that span, he released films like "Starting Over", "The Cannonball Run", "Rough Cut", and a sequel to "Smokey and the Bandit".

"Burt Reynolds was one of my heroes", the former California governor wrote on Twitter. He was cast as "Quint Asper" in the popular Gunsmoke series as well as earlier roles in other shows, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Perry Mason. Reynolds was an award-winning actor with numerous nominations under his belt, including his Oscar-nominated best-supporting actor role in Boogie Nights.

The Burt Reynolds Ranch was a sprawling 153-acre estate, which included a petting zoo which was used for filming scenes for Smokey and the Bandit.

Still, Reynolds had plenty other roles in which he could revel in - the MI native was the top-grossing movie star in Hollywood for each year from 1978 to 1982.

Reynolds turned to television and had a successful run on the situation comedy Evening Shade, co-starring Marilu Henner and Charles Durning.

In one of his last interviews, Burt Reynolds admitted he regretted turning down roles in James Bond and Star Wars. In 1972 he appeared in John Boorman's harrowing survival classic Deliverance, and his career enjoyed a brief renaissance when he starred in Paul Thomas Anderson's 1997 movie Boogie Nights as a porn director who takes Mark Wahlberg's character under his wing. And there's one thing they can never take away: "Nobody had more fun than I did". He was also married to English actress Judy Carne from 1963 to 1965.

The financial success and cult following of his movies did not parlay into much when it came to critical accolades.
