The risk to the public is low but state and local health experts agree this is an unusually high number of cases for New Hampshire.

"The Sands Resort will immediately notify current and future guests of the Legionella outbreak and take steps to remediate the premise plumbing system in order to mitigate the risk to the public's health", he continued.

The state announced the Legionnaires' Disease "cluster" last weekend with four initial cases. One person sickened in Nashua contracted the disease out of state and the other didn't have a ties to Hampton.

The Legionella bacteria was detected from several water sources on the Sands Resort property, including the hot tub spa.

NYCHA began testing the water supply at the complex about two weeks ago.

Another update is expected on Tuesday.

Legionnaires' disease is caused by inhaling contaminated water vapor, but it is not contagious between people. This pathogen was discovered in 1976 when it infected more than 200 people and killed 34 because air conditioning vents spread the bacteria through the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia during an American Legion convention.

Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there were 6,100 cases in 2016. It can not be contracted by drinking or coming into physical contact with water containing the bacteria (such as while swimming). The symptoms are similar to general pneumonia, which includes cough, fever, headaches, muscle ache, and shortness of breath.

Most healthy people who are exposed to the bacteria won't contract the disease, but about 1 in 10 people who contract the infection will die from it, according to the CDC.

Legionnaires' disease is treated with antibiotics and often requires hospitalization. Groups at highest risk for Legionnaires' disease include people who are middle-aged or older, especially cigarette smokers, people with chronic lung disease or weakened immune systems and people who take medicines that weaken their immune systems (immunosuppressive drugs).
