Brett Kavanaugh's nomination hearing for the Supreme Court began Tuesday morning with plenty of partisan bickering but it was the lunch break exit by Kavanaugh that has some wondering whether he intentionally snubbed the handshake of Fred Guttenberg, father of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting victim Jaime Guttenberg. He says he wants the losing party to say "Kavanaugh gave me a fair shake".

Guttenberg attended the confirmation hearing as a guest of Sen. "I am not a pro-prosecution or pro-defense judge". That is, frankly, also not normal for Democrats and their handling of Trump judicial nominees.

Republicans hold a one-vote majority in the Senate.

One of the big questions surrounding Kavanaugh is how he would vote on cases related to Roe vs. Wade. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) estimated it would have required staffers to review 7,000 pages of documents per hour.

Perhaps the key issue for Kavanaugh will be his loyalty to President Trump and whether or not he believes a sitting president can be indicted in light of the ongoing Russian Federation probe which so far has led to two guilty convictions for former Trump campaign associates.

Vermont's Democrat Patrick Leahy said it was the "least transparent vetting for any Supreme Court nominee I have ever seen".

Republicans also a year ago reduced the margin for advancing Supreme Court nominations from 60 votes in the 100-seat Senate to a simple majority in order to force through the confirmation of Trump's first high court nominee Neil Gorsuch. "We have not had an opportunity to have a meaningful hearing", Democratic Senator Kamala Harris said. Rather than engage Fred, however, Kavanaugh shot him a confused look and turned away. refusing to talk to the guy.

Otherwise, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said, "this process will be tainted and stained forever".

Asked if he thought the NRA's backing of his confirmation might have played any role in Kavanaugh's choice not to speak to him or shake his hand, Guttenberg said: "You know what?" Senate Democratic leaders have vowed a fierce fight to try to block his confirmation.

Kavanaugh, now a circuit judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, will also praise his colleague Judge Merrick Garland, President Barack Obama's unsuccessful Supreme Court nominee.

Trump is facing dismal approval ratings as special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of possible Russian collusion with Trump's team closes in on the White House. But as Graham said yesterday, you can't lose elections and pick judges.

The same fact is true today as it was before the late Justice Antonio Scalia died: The U.S. Supreme Court is one crucial vote away from changing the legal standard for a host of issues, from abortion and affirmative action to immigration and the limits of executive power.

Republican Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said earlier on Fox News that more documents on Kavanaugh have been released than on any other nominee. He has been on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for 12 years and has authored 307 opinions, concurrences and dissents.

President Trump weighed in on the hearing Tuesday, saying that it was a display of how "angry. the other side is".
