  • Canada Trade Talks In Jeopardy After Leaked ‘Off The Record’ Trump Comments

On Friday, Trump notified Congress he would be signing a revamped deal with Mexico within 90 days, regardless of whether Canada joined or not. The president warned Congress not to meddle with the trade negotiations or he would terminate the trilateral trade pact altogether. Canada cited its ongoing disagreement with the USA over allegations it dumps lumber into America as a reason to keep the panels, they said.

In Charlotte, Trump added that if the USA does not reach a deal with Canada, "that's just fine", offering a variation of one of the lines leaked to the Toronto Star paper: "I say affectionately, we'll just have to tariff those cars coming in, that's a lot of money coming into the coffers of the United States".

Trump took to Twitter again Saturday night, tweeting "We shouldn't have to buy our friends with bad Trade Deals and Free Military Protection!"

Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, had on Sunday disputed the White House's strategy for renegotiating the NAFTA trade pact and argued that Trump had "done more to hurt workers than to help" them since taking office.

Trump then admitted to "scaring the Canadians into submission by repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs".

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland gave a cold shoulder to U.S. President Donald Trump and cozied up instead to her American trade counterpart Friday as Canada's effort to re-enter the North American free-trade fold fell short of meeting its end-of-week deadline.

President Donald Trump never misses an opportunity to vilify the press or insult Canada, which has been one of the United States' closest allies over the years-and this week, he has managed to accomplish both.

If she told I was involved in any decision about her career then she was lied to. 'I was an actor and only an actor. The actress reportedly wrote on her Facebook page that she had been struggling with Celiac disease and seizures.

Trumka not only said he's anxious to see America "move forward" with the deal, he bashed the prior incarnation of NAFTA, and those who upheld it.

The most striking example involves one of the biggest investments Canadians make - buying a vehicle. "With good will and flexibility on all sides, a win-win-win outcome is achievable".

Moving ahead towards securing the trade deal with Mexico does not mean Washington is ceasing attempts to agree a deal with Canada, Lighthizer noted. Neither U.S. nor Canadian negotiators are talking publicly about the issues that divide them.

"I have now been working with Ambassador Lighthizer and his team for more than a year". "I think the key decision was freezing Canada out and then negotiating directly with Mexico". "At the same time, we are concerned that excluding Canada from a final agreement will limit our export opportunities and hurt the USA economy". The spat reignited in November 2016 when the USA lumber industry filed a petition asking for duties, alleging Canadian wood is heavily subsidized and imports were harming American mills and workers.

USA lawmakers have generally backed NAFTA, saying the overall economic benefits of cheaper products and greater efficiency have outweighed the negative consequences of job losses.

Since March, for example, Trump's team has applied new tariffs of up to 25 percent on almost $85 billion worth of steel and aluminum on the grounds that these imports pose a threat to America's national security.
