The drills come amid tensions between Russian Federation and the West over Syria's northern rebel-held region of Idlib.

Russian Federation has given Assad crucial support throughout the seven-year war in Syria, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people and uprooted millions since it began with a government crackdown on protesters in March 2011.

"What we need to do now is to wipe out those terrorist groups which persist, particularly within [Idlib]", said Mr. Lavrov, accusing rebel groups within Idlib of targeting Russian bases with military drone attacks.

The explosions rocked the area in al-Ghab plains, south of idlib and came after rebels detected government troop movement in the area, according to Rami Abdurrahman, head of the war monitoring Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

De Mistura said he had no information about any "imminent attack", but pointed to information about military build-ups and messages of warning between the sides in Syria.

"This is the condition set by Moscow to avert a broad offensive".

"We in HTS are striving to find an effective solution in the liberated Syrian north that would protect our people from a possible offensive by the criminal regime and its allies".

The prospect of a massive Russian-backed offensive in a province that is home to some three million people - half of them already displaced from other parts of Syria - has raised fears of a new humanitarian tragedy.

Russia has this month been actively expanding its naval forces in the Mediterranean, part of what a Russian newspaper on Tuesday called Moscow's largest naval build-up since it entered the Syrian conflict in 2015. UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Syria Staffan de Mistura.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday he was "deeply concerned about the growing risks of a humanitarian catastrophe in the event of a full-scale military operation in Idlib".

"I am once again prepared... personally and physically to get involved myself, with the government cooperation this time... to ensure such a temporary corridor would be feasible and guaranteed for the people so that they can then return to their own places once this is over", he said.

"It would be a tragic irony frankly if at nearly the end of. a territorial war inside Syria, we would be witnessing the most horrific tragedy to the largest number of civilians", he said. They don't think any armed group in [Idlib] city is different than others, they consider them all terrorists.
