Australian prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull narrowly survived a leadership challenge Tuesday from within his ruling Liberal Party, but now faces a battle of attrition with the right-wing faction that wants him ousted.

The Prime Minister has gone to extraordinary lengths to mollify restless members of his own party this morning, dumping the carbon emissions reduction target from his National Energy Guarantee (NEG) policy.

The prime minister, meanwhile, called for unity: "We can not allow, as I said in the party room today, our internal issues to undermine our work". "A lot of them might well be spurious, but this is a risky time for the prime minister". "People are a "disgrace" or "appalling, ' they're 'totally incompetent" and so it goes on", he wrote in the Australian Financial Review.

Former Labor minister Graham Richardson was even blunter writing in The Australian today, calling Mr Turnbull "a dead man walking".

The prime minister on Sunday promised to use a "big stick" against power companies that fail to deliver cheaper prices and make it easier for Australians to know when they are paying too much.

"In parliament, he's going to be standing there in front of a backbench, a third, almost half of whom don't support him", he said.

At least three Nationals MPs, including Veteran Affairs Minister Darren Chester, are threatening to quit the Coalition and sit on the cross bench if Dutton becomes Liberal leader.

THE remaking of Peter Dutton will be a major element of the ongoing Liberal leadership contest. Ms Sales asked whether there was a "legitimate threat" to the Prime Minister.

Julie Bishop reclaimed her position as deputy leader after running unopposed for her role.

The poor poll result comes as Turnbull tries to defuse a revolt over a key energy policy from some backbench lawmakers, who are urging him to abandon Australia's Paris Agreement emissions target and provide more support for the coal industry.

Peter Dutton has repositioned himself as a smiley, sunny pollie.

The report about Dutton followed his interview with Ray Hadley on 2GB on Thursday in which Hadley challenged him over whether he was "blindly loyal" to Turnbull.

The Home Affairs Minister is on Monday expected to attend a scheduled Cabinet meeting, which is likely to also touch on the company tax cuts stand-off.

He said he supported you yesterday, what changed in the last 12 hours before the ballot was held, Prime Minister? "I think there is a reasonable case for his disqualification but he also has a reasonable defence". We can not allow - as I said in the Party Room today - internal issues to undermine our work, to create a risk, a real risk, that Bill Shorten will be the Prime Minister. "My job from here ... is to make sure I can prosecute the sort of messages I just spoke about".

Yet with Australia now enjoying a record 27th straight year of economic expansion, with low unemployment, low crime and high personal wealth, why has politics Down Under become so turbulent? "I'm very proud of the fact that I got children out of detention - we've moved now nearly 400 people off Manus and Nauru that Labor put there, and that is a significant achievement". They hate it when we are talking about each other.

'I don't actually expect a challenge today, but we'll wait and see, ' he told the ABC on Tuesday.

Mr Dutton was just seven votes short of being Australia's Prime Minister. We don't take it for granted, but what I say to all those who didn't vote for the Prime Minister; we now have the opportunity to focus on what the electorate want to hear from us.

"We are not going to propose legislation purely for the objective of it being defeated".

But he said state regulators could have more flexibility to extend the life of coal plants, if the company makes such a request. Still, from 2005-2017 Wheeler said energy-related carbon emissions have gone down in the 14 percent.
