After a short silence, prosecutor Andres stood and said, "Yes".

Several jurors took notes while Andres talked; others gazed attentively. Finally, Ellis told Manafort that "you have the absolute right to testify and you have the absolute right not to testify", and that the jury would be advised not to let Manafort's decision impact their own.

The case doesn't address allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The trial is the first courtroom test for Mueller, who indicted Manafort in October 2017 as part of an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election.

Manafort's legal team also lost their attempt to have the charges thrown out without going to a jury. They've called Gates a liar, a philanderer and an embezzler.

On Tuesday, the defense rested its case after opting not to present any witnesses.

His identity and condition are unknown. "Never really knew it until now". "I was kind of hoping that was gonna be it". Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration directed inquiries to local authorities.

Manafort also faces a trial in September in the District of Columbia, where he is charged with conspiracy to launder money, conspiracy against the United States, making false statements, and charges in connection with failing to register as a foreign agent even though he lobbied in the US on behalf of the pro-Kremlin Ukrainian government of former president Viktor Yanukovych.

"The defense makes a significant argument about materiality, but in the end, I think materiality is an issue for the jury", U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III reportedly said in court Tuesday on the 11th day in court. Manafort's lawyers asked the judge to toss out all the charges against him, but they focused in particular on four bank-fraud charges.

Manafort, 69, is facing tax evasion and bank fraud charges after being accused of hiding income earned from his Ukrainian work from the IRS.

Manafort's lawyers argued there is no way that one of the banks, Federal Savings Bank, could have been defrauded because its chairman, Stephen Calk, knew full well that Manafort's finances were in disarray but approved the loan to Manafort anyway.

Prosecutors on Monday rested their case after 10 days and 27 witnesses. The prosecution depicted Manafort as using the millions of dollars hidden in offshore accounts to fund a luxurious lifestyle. Prosecutors said he made the loans because he wanted Manafort's help in late 2016 in obtaining a job with the incoming administration of President Donald Trump. Gates came on board the Trump campaign with Manafort and stayed for the duration of the campaign, later serving as deputy chairman for Trump's inaugural committee and then starting a pro-Trump PAC.

"The plea deal that [Mueller] gave to Gates is shameful", McCarthy said Tuesday on "Outnumbered".
