  • Grieving Orca Whale Releases Dead Calf After More Than Two Weeks

Tahlequah, aka the orca mother J35, has finally surrendered her deceased newborn calf, after carrying her lifeless body for seventeen straight days in an arduous display of animal grief and denial that made headlines around the world.

The Center for Whale Research said Tahlequah "vigorously chased a school of salmon with her pod-mates" when researchers spotted her on Saturday (local time).

Her calf was born and died on July 24, and researchers say she towed it around for more than 1,500 kilometres.

Digital images of the mother orca taken from the shore show that she is in good physical condition and "her behaviour is remarkably frisky".

As we learned from a report from Mark Leiren-Young at The Georgia Straight, the 20-year-old orca refused to let her sink, pushing the body the surface each time it slid under water.

Sadly, Tahlequah and her daughter enjoyed less than an hour swimming together after the calf was born, before the infant died of an unknown cause.

Researchers said J35 towed the calf for almost 1,000 miles over a span of 17 days. "This kind of behavior is like a period of mourning and has been seen before".

She has featured in countless stories, including a report from Kara Kostanich for United States network ABC, which broke hearts when it was broadcast on August 1.

Balcomb said he also saw J50 with her mother and brother on Saturday, along with NOAA researchers who were following her to collect prey remains and feces.

Tahlequah is one of two orcas in the pod that scientists have been monitoring.

It added: "The carcass has probably sunk to the bottom of these inland marine waters of the Salish Sea [between Canada and the US], and researchers may not get a chance to examine it for necropsy (autopsy of an animal)". "Orcas. are charismatic megafauna", she said.

Ken Balcomb, the founder of the Center for Whale Research, told Q13 Fox that J35's actions were a "tour of grief" and "unprecedented".

"It's just really neat to see how much people care, and how much people are concerned, and the sense of stewardship people have for their environment around them, particularly here in B.C.", said the veterinarian.
