The "Queen of Soul" has battled multiple health issues over the years, including pancreatic cancer in 2011.

Franklin announced her retirement from making music early a year ago, so she could spend more time with her grandchildren and her family.

Her statement came after she cancelled a series of shows due to ill health.

The singer was forced to cancel two live shows in March on doctor's orders, with her last live performance coming at the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY last November.

According to Roger Friedman's Showbiz 411, the singing icon's family has asked for "prayers and privacy" as they gather around the superstar in Detroit.

In an interview with Norman Jopling, which was first published in Record Mirror in 1968, Aretha talked about another of her popular songs, "I Never Loved A Man".

The same year, she was also forced to deny a death hoax, after fake news of her death spread online. She will be so missed as a mother, sister, friend, cousin.

She said at the time: "I will be recording, but this will be my previous year in concert".
