Calls for investigation into deadly Yemen school bus attack

  • Saudi-led coalition air strikes on bus carrying children in Yemen leaves 'dozens' dead

Declarations of outrage were followed by demands for an immediate investigation on Thursday after reports that the US -backed Saudi coalition slaughtered dozens of innocent civilians, including many children traveling on a school bus, when it bombed an area near a crowded market in Yemen.

The western-backed coalition fighting the rebel Houthi group in Yemen said the air strikes on Thursday targeted missile launchers used to attack the southern Saudi industrial city of Jizan, which killed a Yemeni civilian there, according to the state news agency SPA.

The coalition did not specify the target, but the International Committee of the Red Cross said the attack hit a bus filled with children, causing dozens of casualties.

Children have been killed or wounded in an attack on a bus in northern Yemen, the International Committee of the Red Cross says.

"Under the worldwide humanitarian law, civilians must be protected during conflict", it added.

Dramatic images of wounded children, clothes and school bags smeared with blood were aired by the Al Masirah TV, reported AP.

Asked about the airstrike by the USA -backed coalition, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters "we are certainly concerned".

Saudi Arabia shot down a missile fired by the Huthis on Wednesday, with debris killing a Yemeni man and wounding 11 others, the coalition said.

Yemen rebels announce temporary Red Sea ceasefire
The country is now in the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with more than 22.2 million people in need of assistance. Yemen's war has killed almost 10,000 people, with more than eight million Yemenis at risk of starvation.

Thursday's attack marks a grim milestone in a war that lately has seen yet another escalation, as coalition-backed Yemeni government forces have made a recent push to reclaim the key port city of Hodeidah from rebels.

"Our support to the coalition consists of aerial refueling and intelligence support to assist our partners in securing their borders from cross-border attacks from the Houthis".

"Scores killed, even more injured, most under the age of ten", the head of the ICRC in Yemen, Johannes Bruwer, said on his Twitter account, adding that the ICRC in Yemen is "sending additional supplies to hospitals to cope with the influx". He also accused Houthis of using kids as "tools and covers for their terrorist acts".

Say: I want the State Dept to condemn the Saudis for bombing Yemeni children and I want the U.S. to stop selling weapons to Saudi Arabia.

Nauert did not clarify what she meant by her last sentence, which seems to imply that the deadly airstrike - which hit a bus full of children - was a retaliatory measure.

But on social media, critics noted that other coverage of the air strike in the USA and Britain-which also supports the coalition-failed to acknowledge the countries' involvement in the war.

The Iran-aligned Houthis regularly fire into Saudi Arabia and have targeted its capital, Riyadh, with ballistic missiles.

The United Nations has repeatedly criticized the actions of the coalition.
