  • HOLLYWOOD CA- MARCH 04 Review of the Oscar statue at the 90th Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood & Highland Center

In changes to the awards ceremony announced Wednesday morning nearly certainly created to try to address declining ratings to the ABC telecast (in the Academy's words "improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world"), the Motion Picture Academy announced a new category for new category for "outstanding achievement in popular film".

Academy president John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson wrote in a note to academy members, "We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world". The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. Edited versions of the awards given out during the breaks will air later in the broadcast.

Starting with the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, a new Oscar will be awarded for achievement in popular film. For comparison, last year's ceremony aired in early March and the upcoming 2019 show is set for February 24.

Last year, "Wonder Woman's" complete shutout aroused an uproar from many who consider the first female-headlined superhero film award-worthy, and as Woerner pointed out, Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" was nominated for eight Academy Awards, but not best picture. "The Last Fall" director Matthew A. Cherry agreed "Black Panther" is a shoe-in, while adding that he'd like to see the Academy add a best stunt race, too.

Gates is expected to face 6 years in jail, despite his plea deal, whilst Manafort is facing life imprisonment if found guilty. Ellis III said late on August 3 that Downing could begin his questioning of Laporta on Monday and wouldn't rush him.

Earlier airdate of February 9th, 2020. While the details of this new category have not been disclosed yet, it's safe to assume that nominees will be films that managed to please not only critics, but audiences as well.

The 2019 Oscars will look a little different.

Change is coming to the #Oscars. And what criteria will be used to determine whether a film qualifies as "popular?" Sure. Will it mean as much if it's in a special category that some fans view as a consolation prize that lessens the impact of the blockbusters while also potentially dulling the shine on the Best Picture category?

Some categories will be presented "during commercial breaks (categories to be determined). Popular films are films!" And that's saying a lot since you awarded Best Picture to Crash.
