Russian Federation names Steven Seagal as special U.S. envoy

In November 2016, the Michigan-born martial artist visited Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin to receive an unusual gift: his very own Russian passport.

The announcement comes with Russia-U.S. ties at a low ebb, over long-standing conflicts in Syria and Ukraine and allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which Moscow rejects.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that US action film star Steven Seagal has been appointed Russia's special envoy for humanitarian ties with the United States.

As for the choice of Steven Seagal to be the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative to improve United States and Russian relations, that seems a bit puzzling.

In a Facebook post, the Russian Foreign Ministry said his role is to facilitate relations between the two countries "in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges".

It is the latest honour Russian Federation has bestowed upon Seagal.

He broke the budding 21-run partnership between him and Dawid Malan (20) as Rahul held another excellent, low catch at leg slip. Ashwin, who also took the wicket of Alastair Cook with the final ball of the second day, had figures of 3-34.

"I hope we can strive for peace, harmony and positive results in the world", he added.

The Russian ministry said he would not be paid for his envoy role.

As for Russian and United States relations now, things are a bit contentious, to say the least. "I take this honour very seriously", he wrote on Twitter. Trump and Seagal have both said over the years that the United States would greatly benefit from a strong relationship with Russian Federation.

"And this kind of propaganda is really a diversion ... so that the people in the United States of America won't really see what's happening", Seagal continued, praising Putin as "a great world leader" and "brilliant tactician".

Russian Federation is like a second "home" to Seagal.
