Sekulow also supported Trump's tweet on Sunday asserting there was nothing illegal about a controversial 2016 Trump Tower meeting aimed at getting dirt on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

In one of a series of early morning tweets, the USA president issued in apparent reaction to a CNN report, Trump said: "Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower". "I did not know about it!"

Until now Mr Trump had claimed that Donald Jr met Natalia Veselnitskaya and other Kremlin lobbyists at Trump Tower in June 2016 to discuss adoptions.

Kimmel began with the recent admission that Don Jr. did knowingly meet with the Russians trying to get information on Hillary Clinton.

One of the president's personal lawyers said on Sunday that if Trump is subpoenaed by the special counsel, his lawyers will attempt to quash it in court. But he has said since that no "meaningful information" was offered and the meeting focused mostly on the issue of adoptions of Russian children. Trump Jr. has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he couldn't remember if he told his father about the meeting.

Mr Trump's latest tweet appears to contradict a previous statement from the Trump camp about the meeting.

Trump, however, has maintained he had no prior knowledge about the meeting.

This is something Trump has said regularly about the Trump Tower meeting, and something he has re-upped now that Michael Cohen is reportedly telling people that Trump did know about it.

Tax Free Weekend recap

Mueller is in the midst of a 15-month investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, Trump campaign ties to Russia and whether Trump, as president, obstructed justice by trying to thwart the investigation.

In an angry tweet yesterday morning, however, he attacked the "Fake News" media reports that he was concerned about his son's role. And they said Mr Trump Jr, Mr Kushner and White House staff had made a "full disclosure" about that session to Mr Mueller and Congress. In politics, that's called opposition research.

"And we've seen 1.4 million documents, we've provided 32 witness interviews of any type of collusion on behalf of the president and the Russians".

As Trump and his allies have tried to discredit the probe, a new talking point has emerged: that even if that meeting was held to collect damaging information, none was provided and "collusion" - Trump's go-to description of what Mueller is investigating - never occurred. Mueller is probing whether anyone connected with the president's campaign conspired with Russian Federation to tip the election in Trump's favor.

Moreover, contrary to Trump's assertion, there are extremely strict federal laws prohibiting foreign nationals from getting materially involved in US elections.

On what is wrong with this meeting: My problem with all of this, it takes me back to the Clinton years, my problem is okay he may not have committed any crimes that's fine and if he hasn't we should say that.

Indeed, that's been the Trump team's story.

'They purposely cause great division & distrust. Trump wrote. "They are very risky & sick!"
