  • #JustIn: Kaliagnar M. Karunanidhi Passes Away At 94

DMK leader M K Stalin has asked party cadres to remain calm and maintain "military-like discipline" after his father and party president M Karunanidhi died in a Chennai hospital on Tuesday.

"With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi on August 7, 2018 at 6.10 p.m".

The DMK President was admitted in the hospital following sudden decrease in his blood pressure late on July 26.

The DMK chief was admitted to Kauvery Hospital for the first time on July 18 for change of tracheostomy tube.

The same year he parted with 50% of the seats to the Congress in the Assembly elections but the alliance was not fruitful and MGR won.

Karunanidhi, whose original name was Dakshinamurthy, was born in Thirukkuvalai village in Nagapattinam district.

Trump Jr. downplays 'bait and switch' Trump Tower meeting
Trump Jr. has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he couldn't remember if he told his father about the meeting. Mr Trump's latest tweet appears to contradict a previous statement from the Trump camp about the meeting.

The controversy erupted after the state government rejected the DMK's demand for allotting space for Karunanidhi's burial on the Marina beach, instead offering space near the memorials to former chief ministers Chakravarty Rajagopalachari and K. Kamraj at Guindy.

Karunanidhi was chief minister of Tamil Nadu five times and successfully contested 12 state elections, building legions of supporters on the way. Both were bitter foes of Karunanidhi in politics.

Karunanidhi also started a school newspaper that mushroomed into the "Murasoli", now known as the DMK's official newspaper. Tamil Nadu is now in a risky state of non-governance.

Like his mentor Annadurai, Karunanidhi used his writing skills to further the ideology of the Dravidian movement through Tamil cinema.

#03:50 PM: Stalin requests CM Palaniswami for a place along Marina beach: DMK working president MK Stalin has reportedly requested Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for a place along the Marina beach in Chennai, where they can build a memorial for the ailing DMK chief Karunanidhi.

On Sunday, President Ramnath Kovind visited the former Chief Minister at the hospital and wished him speedy recovery.
