President Donald Trump of the United States of America has informed that he is willing to meet with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani over Tehran's oil ban without preconditions.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at a press conference at the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom at the State Department in Washington, U.S., July 26, 2018.

Separately, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Trump's repudiation of the accord reached in 2015 was "illegal" and Iran would not easily yield to Washington's renewed campaign to strangle Iran's vital oil exports.

The head of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations said on Tuesday Tehran saw no worth in Trump's offer, made only a week after he warned Iran it risked dire consequences few had ever suffered in history if it made threats against Washington. 'Good for the country, good for them, good for us and good for the world.

Trump's move to force Iran into fresh negotiations has for now reunited Iranian hardliners who opposed the nuclear deal and moderates like Rouhani who championed it to end the Islamic Republic's economically crippling stand-off with Western powers.

The overture comes as Mr Trump and Tehran have been escalating their rhetoric after the USA president's May withdrawal from a landmark nuclear accord.

Shortly before that July 22 tweet, Rouhani had addressed Trump in a speech, saying that hostile US policies could lead to "the mother of all wars".

Khan's party yesterday announced that it is trying to reach out to smaller parties and independents to form the next government. The National Assembly has 272 seats in total but two have been postponed and results of two are awaited.

However, foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said on Monday, prior to Trump's statement, that talks with the current USA administration were impossible.

Trump said he had "no preconditions" for a meeting with the Iranians, adding: "If they want to meet, I'll meet".

"I believe in meetings", especially in cases where war is at stake. No preconditions. If they want to meet, I'll meet'.

USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo told CNBC on Monday that he was on board with the president's invitation, saying Mr Trump "wants to meet with folks to solve problems".

'If the Iranians demonstrate a commitment to make fundamental changes in how they treat their own people, reduce their maligned behaviour, can agree that it's worthwhile to enter in a nuclear agreement that actually prevents proliferation, then the president said he's prepared to sit down and have a conversation with him, ' he said.

Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the president's National Security Council, later said in a statement that the USA would not be lifting any sanctions or re-establishing diplomatic and commercial relations until "there are tangible, demonstrated, and sustained shifts in Tehran's policies".

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., was more skeptical, calling it "another recipe for bad outcomes". And what do we have?
