After batting first, England did not get off to a start that they would have expected. Stokes continued to pester him, as on the next delivery, in the 32nd over, Alastair Cook dropped Pandya at first slip. His huge celebration when he ran out England captain Joe Root on the opening day was a sign of how determined he is to succeed in these conditions.

India were now looking to captain and star batsman Virat Kohli (nine not out) and Ajinkya Rahane (eight not out) to revive the innings in the first of a five-match series.

The hosts put a total of 83 for one until lunch procession presides over.

Shami was eventually rewarded for his persistent accuracy when Jennings played on for 42. While trying to steal a double run, Virat Kohli found him just short of the crease. He is a superstar who is not afraid to speak his mind, as with Wednesday's overzealous mic-drop send off for opposite number, Joe Root, but the fact is he backs it up out in the middle - and never more so that here.

And when Ben Stokes (21) chipped a gentle return catch to Ashwin, England were 243 for seven.

With India suffering a collapse to rival England's from the previous day - losing five wickets for 50 runs - Kohli once again showed his skill with a fantastic century.

At stumps, England were 9 for 1 in their second innings with an overall lead of 22 runs.

It was a miserable passage of play for England in the hour after tea, on a day when they had long seemed sure to vindicate Root's decision to bat first on a pitch of even pace and true bounce.

India managed to get rid of Cook before stumps in England's second innings.

After colliding like raging balls in the limited overs format, heavyweights England and India have now shifted to the grueling Test format, which is set to decide the better team in the tour.

It was nearly an easy-going partnership for the opening duo as they brought up 50 off just 70 balls before the drama began. Vijay scored a knock of 20. India still trail by 211 runs.

Such was the dominance of the 29-year-old captain, the next top scorer for India was opener Shikhar Dhawan with 26.

Twitter reactions:Twitterati is enjoying their time as the pivotal series between England and India came up with the twists from the beginning. He could score only 134 runs in 10 innings with at a low average of 13.4. India will have to win the second session comprehensively to stay competitive in this game.

Two balls later Curran dismissed Rahul for four via the batsman's ugly flat-bat drag-on.
