Smaller wards in the urban areas are expected to be announced first while the rural votes make their way to the ZEC Centre at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Some local results from parallel parliamentary elections have been declared but ZEC chief Priscilla Chigumba said the presidential result may not be ready until Saturday.

"Overall (there was) a huge amount of voting - especially young people, mostly in a very good atmosphere, generally peaceful, which is positive", Brok added.

Asked on the credibility of the elections, Justice Chigumba said she is "absolutely confident that the elections were not rigged and we want to show the world that we won't steal or subvert the will of the people".

The opposition alleges, however, that voting results forms were not posted at more than one-fifth of the country's polling stations as the law requires.

Previously-banned European Union election observers, present for the first time in years, said participation appeared high but warned of possible problems in the vote process.

The electoral commission says it found no "cheating" in Monday's election, the first since longtime leader Robert Mugabe stepped down in November under military pressure.

"We have won the election, we are now daring ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) to announce the result". There will be a runoff on September 8 if no candidate wins more than half the votes.

Why are officials results taking so long?

During Mugabe's rule, national elections were overshadowed by repeated voting procedure violations and the suppression of the opposition. "Waiting patiently for official results as per the constitution", Mnangagwa, 75, Mugabe's former right-hand man, said on Twitter.

Officials on Tuesday counted votes a day after millions of Zimbabweans peacefully cast their votes in a process closely watched by worldwide monitors, who have yet to announce whether the election was free and fair.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said it had so far released results for seven parliament seats out of 210.
