A polar bear who attacked and injured a guard leading tourists off a cruise ship on an Arctic archipelago has been shot dead, according to Norwegian authorities and the cruise company.

Tromso hospital told AFP the man's life was not in danger and he was in a stable condition.

Svalbard is mostly ice - and on the islands, polar bears are thought to outnumber people, the BBC reported. The team failed to spot that there was a bear on the shore and it charged the man.

The victim, in his forties, was given first aid at the scene of the attack yesterday...

"One of the guards was unexpectedly attacked by a polar bear that had not been spotted and he was unable to react himself", the company said on Facebook. A promotional film (see above) highlights wildlife, including polar bears.

Rescue helicopters were sent from Longyearbyen, in Norway's Svalbard archipelago, on Saturday to respond to a report that a man had been injured by a bear.

State Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in the area as firefighters work to contain the flames. The tragic result of this explosion was the death of a bulldozer operator who was battling the blaze.

Officials said the attack had occurred when tourists on the MS Bremen landed on the most northern island in the Svalbard archipelago, an island between Norway and and the North Pole. Hapag-Lloyd is among those organizing Arctic expeditions.

The guard was injured during a trip to an island in Svalbard, which is located between mainland Norway and the North Pole. To prepare for a shore leave, the polar bear guards go ashore in advance after sighting the landing site as a group and without passengers.

But critics online say the bear was only acting like a bear, and didn't deserve to die.

Polar bears have become poster animals for climate change, with scientists identifying human-driven global warming as the biggest threat to the bears' continued existence. "The polar bear distribution is strongly related to the distribution of sea ice", it added.

"They had no right to get themselves into a situation where they needed to defend themselves", said one Twitter user.

No further information about the attack was given, but a photograph showed the polar bear's body after it was killed by the other guard.
