Bosenko said authorities were still looking for seven people after finding nine others who had been reported missing.

The city of Redding firefighter killed while fighting the fast-moving Carr Fire Thursday night has been identified as Fire Inspector Jeremy Stoke.

The other three victims - 70-year-old Melody Bledsoe and her two great-grandchildren, 5-year-old James Roberts and 4-year-old Emily Roberts - died when walls of flames swept through the family's rural property on the outskirts of Redding. Cal Fire unified incident commander Bret Gouvea said cooler temperatures and increased humidity had given firefighters a window of opportunity to attack the massive fire.

A Go Fund Me effort, launched overnight to help Ed Bledsoe, had raised nearly half its $30,000 goal by midday Sunday. The weather service notes that "spreading is not driven by the wind, but rather the fire itself", meaning the rising of hot air and gases inside the fire creates a wind that feeds it.

Redding Searchlight is reporting that two firefighters died and three have been injured from the Carr Fire. Triple-digit temperatures and dry vegetation are making it hard for crews to corral the blaze.

Fire officials warned that the blaze would probably burn deeper into urban areas before there was any hope of containing it.

One of them, 57-year-old David Franceschine, said he had been on a camping trip when the fire erupted.

The fire broke out on July 23, 2018, which forced tens of thousands of people to flee from their homes. Here's how you can help those impacted by the Carr Fire: GoFundMe has published a running list of verified campaigns supporting individual families whose homes were destroyed in the fire. The fires that began Friday are burning about 120 miles southwest of Redding.

The nearby town of Keswick, with a population of about 450, was reduced to cinders, and two firefighters were killed.

"This fire was whipped up into a whirlwind of activity" by gale-force winds, he said, "uprooting trees, moving vehicles, moving parts of roadways".

More than 3,000 fire personnel are battling the flames with more than 300 engines and 17 helicopters, Cal Fire reported.

Hundreds of miles to the south, the Cranston Fire grew to 7.5 square miles and about 3,000 residents remained under evacuation orders in Idyllwild and several neighboring communities.

The Carr Fire, which has destroyed more than 650 structures, is the deadliest and most destructive of almost 90 wildfires burning from Texas to Oregon.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials said the fire started in the Whiskeytown community, a once a vibrant and bustling mining town.

"I don't even have any more tears to cry", Decker said. The winds that aided crews in keeping the flames from more populated areas were propelling the inferno at a frightening rate in unpredictable directions. It then jumped the Sacramento River and took out subdivisions on the western edge of Redding. It has already burnt more than 48,000 acres (194 sq km) of land and destroyed at least 500 structures.

An elderly woman and her two great-grandchildren perished in the devastating Northern California wildfire that raged into its fourth day on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in Southern California, where the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park, has grown to 54,481 acres with 30 percent containment, a second firefighter has reportedly been killed.
