At least one person was killed in a fast-growing wildfire that sent residents fleeing from the northern Californian city of Redding, where homes and businesses burned and power was cut on Friday, fire officials said.

"This fire is extremely unsafe and moving with no regard for what's in its path", he said.

Cal Fire reports the Carr Fire has burned 28,763 acres and is only 6% contained as of Thursday night. The blaze is "taking everything down in its path", and the situation on the scene is "very dynamic" and "a heck of a fight", Scott McLean, a spokesman for the crews battling the Carr Fire, told The Associated Press.

The tragic result of this explosion was the death of a bulldozer operator who was battling the blaze. The California National Guard was summoned for help, the Bee reported.

Belongie said she has prepared for the worst, if flames, edged on by winds pushing flames over parched land, continue moving through Redding. Two other firefighters - a bulldozer operator and a city of Redding fireman - have been killed fighting the Carr Fire over the last 24 hours. One of those prompted the closure of much of Yosemite National Park in California.

CalFire reported 65 structures destroyed by the blaze, but McLean called that tally a "placeholder" figure that would grow significantly, with the number of homes lost likely to run into "the hundreds" as the scope of devastation was fully assessed.

32-year-old Brandon McGlover was arrested Thursday in connection with the fire and is being held on five-counts of arson.
