He said: "The moon passes into the shadow of the Earth, blocking the light from the sun".
The total eclipse lasts 1 hour and 43 minutes, with the entire event lasting closer to four hours.
Parts of Europe, Eastern Africa, Australia, and South America will see different phases of the eclipse, but will miss out on parts of the penumbral, partial, or total phases.
This month's lunar eclipse was not a "super moon", but what made this particular eclipse so historic was its unique alignment with the Earth, piercing the exact centre of the Earth's shadow.
During a regular supermoon, the full moon appears up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual. This brings the Moon completely in the shadow of the Earth making it darker. It will begin when the full moon enters the Earth's shadow (Penumbra) at 1.14am on July 28.
While you might imagine that this phenomenon leads to a dark sky, the way the sunlight travels through Earth's atmosphere means that it actually casts the moon in a reddish orange hue-hence the nickname "blood moon".
North America will nearly completely miss out on the blood moon.
The eclipse will be the longest in the 21st Century, starting at 10.44 pm and ending over six hours later, at 4.58 am on Saturday.
