Nadal and Djokovic will clash in a box office Wimbledon semi-final on Friday night, with the victor of the 52nd instalment of their epic rivalry to face either Isner or Anderson in Sunday's championship decider. The Serbian won a thrilling third set tiebreak to take 6-4 3-6 7-6 (11-9) lead into the following day.

While one might think that such a closely fought match was an enthralling display of athleticism, as the game teetered back and forth in the fifth set, the opposite was true.

"Very, very happy to be in this position right now in the semi-finals". Marin Cilic beat Sam Querrey in that 2012 third-round match.

To say it was a close match would be drastically underselling what took place between the two players, whose history against one another dates back to their college days when Isner played at Georgia and Anderson played at IL. Just playing like that in those sort of conditions, just really tough on both of us.

"It feels like it´s a draw but somebody has to win. I really hope we can look at this, because at the end you don't feel great", said Anderson.

"I apologize I'm not more excited right now", he continued. So many mixed emotions.

At Wimbledon in 2010, the American won 70-68 in the final set to end an 11-hour, first-round clash with Nicolas Mahut, played over three days in London and the longest match ever.

Anderson then took to social media hours after the match to once again praise Isner.

A lot of them will have to watch the rest on television on Saturday.

"Hats off to Kevin".

"It's unbelievable that Djokovic finds smashing so hard when he can play volleys so well", he said. It was a good win for him.

"If I have to compare the game that I've played, the level of tennis that I've had (all of) those years and today, I think it's pretty close. I didn't have many chances". No matter what's happening, all matches still going at that time are stopped and the players are forced to come back the next day.

Until Friday, he had not dropped serve until Anderson halted that run at 110 service games in the third set.

Of course, there was another player on the other side of the net - for whom Anderson's triumph was a tragedy: Isner.

Then, 122 minutes into the fifth set, the crowd went wild as a tired-looking Isner faced two more break points, only to save them with back-to-back aces as dark rain clouds gathered over Centre Court.

Novak Djokovic in action against Rafael Nadal.

Anderson will be keeping his fingers and toes crossed that the 52nd meeting of their career turns into another exhausting epic to match some of their previous blockbusters. The Serbian would go on to serve out the set in the 10th game.

Anderson eventually emerged victorious and will face the victor of Djokovic vs Nadal, who is not likely to be decided until tomorrow. There was this: the tumble Anderson took late in the match, only to somehow hop up, hit the ball left handed and ultimately claim the point - all as the typically stoical Wimbledon crowd gasped and screamed above them.
