About 20 people have been injured in a charter plane crash near South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

While the aircraft that crashed was painted in Martin's Air Charter livery, it wasn't owned or operated by Martinair, the unit of Air France-KLM said in a statement posted via Twitter.

"Medics from ER24 and other services are at the scene of a plane crash at Wonderboom in Pretoria", said Russell Meiring, spokesman for the ER24 medical service. Video of the plane's takeoff shows smoke streaming behind it.

"Seen on Sunday morning at Pretoria's Wonderboom Airport‚ ex Rovos Air Convair 340 ZS-BRV‚" the caption read.

"The plane had 19 passengers on board which includes the pilot and the engineer", Johan Pieterse, the local government emergency services spokesman, told AFP.

Meiring said there were two air ambulance helicopters on the scene.

The Aviodrome aerospace theme park in the Netherlands said on its Facebook page that it was "hugely shocked" by the crash.

He said he could not release more information as the South African Civil Aviation Authority were investigating the accident.

"We are unsure as yet of how the incident occurred".

Shortly afterwards the plane crashed into the factory.

According to the Aviodrome's website, it cost €350,000 (US$410,000) to make the plane "flight ready" and buy parts for the planned trip to Europe.
