The insanely hazardous Thai cave rescue has started well

  • Two ambulances were seen leaving the cave in northern Thailand hours after the operation began to rescue the trapped young soccer players

Photo taken on July 8, 2018 shows that the first two boys are transfered to the field hospital after being brought out near the cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The ambulances drove to a nearby helipad and a helicopter was seen taking off. Water from heavy rains have flooded the cave, leaving the team trapped inside.

Meanwhile, the oxygen level in the cave has dropped, taxing the bodies of the captives who have had little to eat or drink while they were missing from June 23 to Monday, when they were located deep within the 10-kilometer cave system in northern Thailand. "Finding the boys doesn't mean we've finished our mission".

But Narongsak and the Thai Navy SEALS, who are involved in the rescue and have regularly posted updates about the operation on their Facebook page, reported only four were out of the cave.

Foreign elite divers and Thai Navy SEALS were forced to begin the complex operation to extract the boys earlier than they had hoped on Sunday morning because forecast rainfall was threatening more flooding that might doom the mission. During the briefing, he said, "Today was the best situation - in terms of kids' health, water, and our rescue readiness". Narongsak Osottanakorn, head of the rescue mission, told reporters that the first boys - who have spent 15 nights trapped some 4 km inside the flooded cave - could emerge around 9pm local time (7:30pm IST). They expect the first rescue to be completed by 9 p.m. Sunday.

Narongsak described the extraction of the initial group of four as "smooth". Operation chief Narongsak Osottanakorn said a total of 90 divers would be involved in the rescue mission, with 40 divers from Thailand, and 50 from overseas, including the United States, Australia, China, and Europe, according to the Washington Post. They will be accompanied by an "all-star" team of 13 global and five Thai divers, officials said.

The four boys rescued Sunday have been taken to a hospital.

The group was found alive in a small cave chamber on Monday after nine days, mounting an global rescue effort with experts weighing in from all over the world. "The meaning of readiness is...ideal weather, water and the kids' readiness, physical and mentally". Ropes were installed to help guide the boys through the darkness. He found kindred spirits in the boys, many of whom had grown up poor or were stateless ethnic minorities, common in this border area between Myanmar and Thailand. At times, the boys had to be hooked up with full-face oxygen masks as they swam through water filling the narrow, pitch-black cave channels. But authorities have said it remains unclear how long the boys would have to remain inside.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk tweeted that a team from his rocket company SpaceX in Los Angeles is building a mini-sub to help with the rescue. A major concern of the rescuers is that oxygen levels in their safe space could fall dangerously low.
