  • Ethical questions have been raised about Scott Pruitt's management decisions as administrator of the EPA

Scott Pruitt abruptly ended lunch at a Washington, D.C., eatery on Monday after a woman cradling her 2-year-old son confronted him, demanded his resignation and told him the country deserves an EPA administrator who "believes in climate change".

The official, describing Team Trump's feeling about Pruitt, wondered whether he would still hold his job as he could crop up in Democratic candidates' ads hitting the president's "swamp", CNN reported Wednesday.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is the latest Trump administration Cabinet official to be ousted or abruptly leave, after his resignation was accepted Thursday by President Donald Trump.

Trump announced the news by tweet on Thursday afternoon, saying only that he was thankful for the "outstanding job" Pruitt had done. "Then, of course, you know, I saw who he's appointed as the interim, and that's reality for us", she said of Pruitt's replacement, his deputy at the EPA Andrew Wheeler.

Pruitt, who has come under fire for allegedly using his position to seek employment for his wife and receiving a discount on a condo rental linked to a lobbying firm, did not respond to Mink during the video, and text at the end said that he "fled the restaurant before I got back to my seat".

"I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda", the president tweeted. "We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright", Trump wrote. Investigators on Capitol Hill had summoned current and former EPA aides for interviews, as part of the more than dozen federal inquiries into Pruitt's spending and management of the agency. "I don't want to be a distraction.' And I think Scott felt that he was a distraction", said Trump.

He has been under scrutiny for renting an apartment with ties to a fossil fuels lobbyist.

Pruitt defended himself against numerous allegations, saying that people are creating controversy because they are against his and the administration's agenda at EPA.

The inspector general said it also would look into whether employees who attempted to raise red flags about Pruitt's spending were sidelined or demoted.

"From moving to roll back strong fuel economy standards, to repealing the Clean Power Plan, to undermining chemical regulation, to suppressing climate science, to advocating for US withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, Scott Pruitt made the EPA stand for Every Polluter's Ally", he said in a statement.

Mr. Pruitt had been seen Wednesday at the White House celebrating Independence Day at an annual picnic for military families at the president's invitation. Pruitt had become a lightning rod, with California Democratic Gov. However, Schatz said Pruitt's "worst transgression was that he systematically worked on behalf of polluters to poison our air and our water and make climate change worse".
