Mexico crashes out of World Cup, losing to 'superior' Brazil 2-0

  • Giant killers with an expiry date Can Mexico break their quarter-final duck against Brazil

For Mexico, the defeat is no doubt a big disappointment for a talented group of players and millions of fans around the country who, after a promising start to the tournament, had dared to dream that El Tri could go farther in Russian Federation 2018 than the team had ever gone before.

Their strategy was to have three players - Carlos Vela, Javier Hernandez and Hirving Lozana on the half-way line when Brazil enjoyed the possession.

But many are exhausted of the theatrics, not least Mexican coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who criticised a nameless player for "too many faking fouls".

Neymar turned in his best performance of the tournament so far against Mexico on Monday, scoring one goal and setting up the other in their 2-0 win. "Some goal celebration that would be against them", one fan wrote.

However, he has faced accusations of diving at this year's World Cup.

Neymar then set up the second in the closing minutes by beating the Mexico offside trap and flicking the ball goalwards before substitute Roberto Firmino tapped home from close range.

Mexican Miguel Layun came to take the ball and sneakily put his toe on Neymar's ankle.

Brazil awoke from their early slumber late in the opening half, but Neymar's angled drive was blocked by Guillermo Ochoa and striker Gabriel Jesus saw the 'keeper block his drive after a smart one-two.

The world's most expensive footballer scored the first and made the second in a scintillating match that took Brazil into a last eight showdown with either Belgium or Japan.

Russian Federation stun Spain on penalties to reach World Cup quarter-finals
Spain dominated the match in terms of possession and territorial domination but posed very little threat to the host nation. Spain were knocked out of at the round of 16 stage following Sunday's penalty shootout loss to Russian Federation .

This is a testament to Brazil's defence who are often subjected to accusations they are rarely tested and once they are they won't be able to cope.

"It is a shame for football, we wasted a lot of time because of one player", said Osorio.

Reaction: Neymar scared by a ghost?

"Anyone who has seen the game knows exactly what I am referring to".

Instead, it was Brazil who kept coming back and he helplessly looked on as Brazil wrapped it up a minute from time through Firmino. My players got more and more exhausted because of that situation. Tite came to join him.

Neymar went on to add that he's sole focus is helping the Selecao lift their record sixth World title.

Though if Jesus continues to start and Brazil don't win the World Cup, the refusal to drop the Manchester City man for Firmino will probably be blamed even though, should the worst happen to Tite's team, this will probably not be the main reason.

After a return to its training base in Sochi, Brazil heads back north to Kazan for Friday's quarterfinal match.
