Outgoing Acting ICE Director Slams Dems For Calls To Abolish Agency

  • An encampment with the Occupy ICE movement grew in June 2018 in front of Portland's US Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices

Hundreds of protests are planned across the country on Saturday to call for the reunification of immigrant families separated at the U.S. -Mexico border as part of the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" border policy.

That idea was the topic of two Saturday morning tweets from Trump, who reassured "the courageous men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit" and said they were doing a "fantastic job".

Addressing a citizenship event at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio praised demonstrators for protesting against the Trump administration's immigration policies and re-upped his support for abolishing ICE.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of NY told CNN last week that ICE has "become a deportation force" and that "you should get rid of it, start over, reimagine it and build something that actually works".

But, while it was unlikely to gain much traction on the right, Trump on Saturday backed ICE agents and said there was "zero chance" of ICE being abolished. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who beat Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's Democratic primary, ran on a platform that called for the abolition of ICE.

Homan has told the story of receiving the request to stay on as chief of ICE under Trump while celebrating at his going away party - a retirement that was deferred for a year and a half. Mr. Trump signed an executive order to end those separations, but many children still remain apart from their parents.

Housed within the sprawling Department of Homeland Security, ICE is responsible for arresting and deporting the 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally.

Caroline Wozniacki calls for Serena Williams seeding at Wimbledon
Williams welcomed her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., with her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, in September. John McEnroe has called on Wimbledon chiefs to take action and seed Serena Williams - at the expense of the 32nd seed.

"You think you should get rid of the agency?" he said, his eyes wide.

Homan also said he's insulted by the number of Democrats who are painting the hard working men and women of ICE in a negative light.

Ronald D. Vitiello, who was serving as acting deputy commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, began Saturday as deputy director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "We should abolish ICE", de Blasio commented Friday morning while being hosted by WNYC radio. "Do not worry or lose your spirit", Trump told ICE agents.

As a result, children were separated from their families and held first in "processing centers", then in shelters.

Ocasio-Cortez is one of many progressives who has called for ICE to be abolished.

Nielsen said that under "his exceptional leadership, the men and women of ICE have made significant progress in restoring the rule of law to our immigration system and countering criminals such as human smugglers and those attempting to exploit children". "You abolish ICE now, you still have the same President with the same failed policies, whatever you replace it with is just still (going to) reflect what this President wants to do".

Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of MA, have stopped short of calling for ICE to be terminated outright and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has circulated talking points advising caution - arguing in a memo obtained by CNN that "abolishing ICE without changing President Trump's disastrous immigration policy will not solve the problem".
