After Erdogan's victory in Sunday's hotly contested presidential and parliamentary elections, however, these differences are likely to be eroded as Turkey sinks into an Islamic version of Putinism. Accordingly, the presidential election was going to go into a run-off with even a small likelihood of İnce as the victor.
Turks sitting at bars, hookah cafes, pubs, and restaurants pretended to not follow each fraction of a percent of votes as it was reported.
WASHINGTON-After speaking out about the recent Turkish elections, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) was attacked on Tuesday by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin.
Ince called on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who won the race, to be "the president of everyone" instead of acting as the head of the ruling Justice and Development Party.
With nearly 97 percent of the parliamentary votes counted, the AK Party's People's Alliance was ahead with 53.6 percent of the votes and the Nation's Alliance was in second place with 34.2 percent of the votes. But amongst wild accusations of vote manipulation, suppression, and media blackouts for the opposition, experts have been asking whether anyone actually thought Erdoğan would let himself be defeated.
Turkish troops, in cooperation with Syrian opposition groups loyal to Ankara, have participated in a number of military operations in Syria, mostly against Kurdish militants, such as the ongoing Olive Branch operation in Afrin and the Euphrates Shield held from August 2016 to March 2017. The post of the prime minister is also set to be abolished. A state of emergency was proclaimed and tens of thousands were arrested and purged by the government.
This was also the first election in which parties could form alliances to compile votes and reduce the risk of not gaining enough votes to win seats.
Moreover, elements of his reelection machine led by loyalists were basically the only group that had the physical and financial means to campaign outside Turkey, albeit with some limitations, to garner the vote of the almost three million Turks living in Europe. If the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) wins seats by polling over the 10 percent minimum threshold, the AKP will struggle to keep its overall majority.
That decline deprived the AKP of winning parliamentary majority, with 295 seats in Turkey's 300-member house.
The main opposition party candidate claimed the majority of those who have voted for him are young.
But these goals are in doubt in the face of an energetic campaign by the secular Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate Muharrem İnce, who has rivalled Mr. Erdoğan's charisma and crowd-pulling on the campaign trail, and a strong opposition alliance in the legislative polls. When he held a rally in Istanbul with millions in attendance, major television networks instead made a decision to show Erdoğan visiting the construction site of the new Istanbul airport or a television interview with one of Erdoğan's aides.
"As the election observation mission by OSCE/ODIHR assesses, the voters had a genuine choice, but the conditions for campaigning were not equal", the joint statement said, referring to the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights. Without exception, all Turkish governments supported by the MHP have collapsed in grave crises, including civil war-like fighting on the streets in 1977 and 1979, and Turkey's worst economic crisis in 2001-2002. Yet even though he and his party already control most of the media and the messaging-Ince got less than one-tenth of the TV airtime that Erdogan enjoyed-the President managed just 52.5% of the vote. Some 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
Voting started at 0500 GMT (8:00am local time) and ended at 1400 GMT (5:00pm local time). The official results largely match figures provided by independent observers, Gurkan Ozturan, a journalist and the executive manager of the Dokuz8 independent citizen journalism news agency, told WhoWhatWhy. "I can not say that I am shocked [by the election results at all], Önal told Radio Sputnik's Loud & Clear Monday".
"According to unofficial results of the election, our nation has entrusted me to serve as president", Erdoğan said. The other opposition parties received even less airtime, and the HDP and its presidential candidate, Selahattin Demirtaş had no coverage at all.
The two matches were played at the same time, one in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and the other in Kazan , Russia. The Sweden-Mexico match had been over, and Germany needed to beat South Korea to squeeze into second place.
