  • We will lick our wounds and come back: Sweden prepare for crucial Mexico show-down

Brazil struggled in its first two matches, first held to a 1-1 draw and then needing late goals to win the other.

Sweden thumped Mexico 3-0 on Wednesday, overcoming their opponents after a scoreless first half in a result that means both teams advance to the World Cup last 16 at the expense of defending champions Germany.

Sweden had a big chance to take the lead inside the first two minutes when Berg headed an Emil Forsberg free kick back across goal towards Andreas Granqvist, but the defender just failed to make contact.

"I think we deserved to win the group, and Mexico deserved to be second".

Janne Andersson's side reaped the rewards of a relentless attacking display to secure top spot in Group F, with Mexico following them through as runners-up after Germany's shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea. "Obviously they are a proud team and have nothing to lose and are potentially risky".

The Swedes doubled their lead when Marcus Berg was fouled in the penalty area by Héctor Moreno and Granqvist calmly slotted in his second penalty of the tournament.

"Yes, we definitely need a miracle".

Plastic beer cups rained down, before Mexico defender Edson Alvarez compounded a miserable evening with a 74th-minute own goal when he miskicked past Ochoa.

But without an improvement on this performance they risk falling once again at the same stage where they have been knocked out in the last six World Cups.

Mexico's group also required tiebreakers in 1994 with all four teams earning four points and a goal difference of zero.

As the runner-up of Group F Mexico meets victor of Group E Monday in Samara.

Mexico will lament its missed chances early as well.
