Champions Germany crashed out of the World Cup after suffering a stunning 2-0 defeat by a tenacious South Korea on Wednesday that eliminated them in the opening round for the first time in 80 years.

However, the defending champions failed to advance and were knocked out of the first round of the World Cup for the first time since 1938.

The Sweden-Mexico match had been over, and Germany needed to beat South Korea to squeeze into second place.

That left Germany with 40 minutes to find the one goal they needed to qualify at Mexico's expense and Kroos, their lifesaver against Sweden, just fired wide nearly at the same time the Swedes went 2-0 up through Andreas Granqvist's penalty. Shin, who had given South Korea a one per cent chance of victory before the game, said: "I feel great, but at the same time, I feel a little bit empty, so I feel a little ambivalent".

After a scoreless first half in both games, Sweden took control in the second half, building up a 3-0 lead over Mexico, leaving fans looking nervous that their World Cup hopes were about to come crashing down around them. South Korea took advantage six minutes into the stoppage time, as Son chased down a long clearing attempt and rolled it into the gaping net. The two matches were played at the same time, one in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and the other in Kazan, Russia.

Germany have crashed out of the World Cup, despite being considered one of the clear favourites to lift the trophy in Russian Federation.

Germany's shock defeat against South Korea, combined with Sweden's comfortable win over Mexico ensured that the World Cup holders have fallen at the first hurdle in their bid to retain the crown they won in such style four years ago in Brazil.

Celtics Star Kyrie Irving Heaps Major Praise On ‘MVP’ LeBron James
The 26-year-old requested that the Spurs trade him, with Leonard open to joining the Lakers or Clippers. James and George would be an ideal match for each other if they were to sign with the same team.

Some Mexican fans pledged their love to South Korea.

The ecstatic crowd of youngsters partied with the South Korean ambassador, as they danced together and made him drink tequila straight from the bottle.

"Maybe we need one more match and he will be in his full form physically and technically, because he is outside the normal standards". "Of course it's disappointing because we lost in the group but I think I can be proud after this win and we can be proud of this win".

Gomez had a decent header stopped by goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo in the 68th minute and could not properly connect with a low cross from Joshua Kimmich in the 72nd as Germany's hopes vanished.

Here are the highlights from day 14 at the World Cup.

But South Korea started pushing back, getting deep into the German zone with a goal. Time was running out when Matt Hummels headed over when free in the area and again and again Korea fund itself in good counter positions but just could not create that chance.
