Instagram expands into long videos, will compete with YouTube

The app is aimed at what Instagram calls "creators", but anyone can create and upload their own videos. When you follow people on Instagram and they make IGTV content, it'll show up as a channel that you can consume through both Instagram and IGTV apps.

From there, users can swipe up in the app to find more content and can select from a series of tabs, including "For You, ' 'Following, ' 'Popular" and 'Continue Watching'.

IGTV will allow users to upload clips that can range from 15 seconds to 60 minutes in length, up from its previous 60 second limit.

Curated: IGTV is focused on the creators you love most and already follow on Instagram.

IGTV is not for shooting live video from within the Instagram app: you can only post pre-shot video from your phone, and only vertical video. From within the video, you have the ability to interact by tapping the like button, commenting, or sending messages via Direct.

The report says that Instagram isn't looking for content that is "too polished" in the traditional TV show mould, but rather hoping that new-style Internet creators will set a more modern tone.

That trend appears to be one of the reasons that Facebook is "hedging its bets" by opening Instagram to the longer-form videos typically found on YouTube, said analyst Paul Verna of the research firm eMarketer.

Trump nominated for Peace Prize by Norway right-wing lawmakers
Nominations for this year's prize also formally closed on February 1, before the summit was agreed. Two lawmakers from Norway nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize after the meeting.

In his remarks, Systrom positioned IGTV as the latest step in the company's "evolution" and suggested that horizontal video is inconvenient in an era when media consumption is increasingly happening on smartphones.

While Facebook offers no detailed revenue breakdown, eMarketer estimates Instagram will generate $5.48 billion in net United States ad revenue this year, up 70.4 percent from last year and accounting for more than one-fourth of Facebook's net mobile ad revenue. Similarly to TVs, as soon as you open IGTV, you'll be presented with a video.

Facebook introduced its Watch platform in 2017 as a way to compete with YouTube's rising popularity among teen users. "There will be a way for creators to make a living".

Instagram's parent company, Facebook, has also been making a concerted effort to bolster its video, including adding new ways for creators to monetize videos and for audiences to (literally) play along.

Videos uploaded to IGTV will be vertically-orientated, so they can be viewed fullscreen on a smartphone when it is held in portrait.

Instagram, which had some 800 million users as of September, has been outpacing rival social networks such as Twitter and Snapchat and has been gaining younger users even as Facebook itself has seen declines in the youth segment.
