  • Manafort had been accused of tampering with witnesses

Others joined in speculation whether Paul Manafort would now have the motivation to flip on Trump, especially given what looks to be increasingly aggressive tactics from Robert Mueller to put the squeeze on Donald Trump's former campaign manager.

He was booked into the Northern Neck Regional Jail at 8:22 p.m. ET Friday night.

Sending the former Trump campaign chairman to jail could boost the pressure on him to cut a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller.

Manafort was booked into the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Virginia.

Prosecutors alleged that by committing a new crime while on release, Manafort violated the terms of his home confinement in Alexandria, Virginia, and they asked the judge to revoke or revise it. Manafort is accused of money laundering, as well as tax and bank fraud charges.

The judge made the decision on Friday after special counsel Robert Mueller, who's leading the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 United States presidential election, alleged that Manafort and one of his associates had tried to tamper with witnesses in the case, Xinhua reported. "A very short period of time".

Manafort was arraigned Friday on the obstruction counts and is set for trial in Washington in September over the allegations of secret lobbying.

She revoked Mr Manafort's bail, saying she had no choice but to lock him up because she couldn't stop him from having contact with people.

Giuliani also said the President has told his attorneys, "I haven't pardoned anybody".

Just hours before the Judge Jackson sent Manafort to jail, Trump told reporters during an impromptu appearance on the White House lawn that he "felt badly" for Manafort being investigated because the alleged crimes occurred years prior to Manafort joining the Trump campaign.

The distinction matters because unregistered foreign lobbying in the U.S.is a crime, while lobbying exclusively in Europe would be outside the special counsel's jurisdiction.

"This is not about politics", Jackson said.

"Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort", Trump wrote on Twitter even though Manafort has not been sentenced - he has not been convicted on any of the charges. Like Manafort has nothing to do with our campaign. He also included a comparison to "Comey and Crooked Hillary".

In a freakish tweet soon after the court proceedings, Trump noted the "tough sentence for Paul Manafort" - despite the fact Manafort has not been sentenced.

Mueller brought the new obstruction charges against Manafort and a longtime associate who prosecutors have said has ties to Russian intelligence.

"Manafort has clearly been of the mindset until now that either through fighting this at a trial and/or through a pardon, he is going to get out of this", says former U.S. Assistant Attorney Mimi Rocah.

The witnesses told investigators that they "understood" that Manafort was reaching out to influence the testimony, according to court papers.

Mr Manafort is now confined to his home in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, and forced to wear a Global Positioning System monitoring device.
