Sri Lanka's cricketers refused to take the field on the third day of the second cricket Test against the West Indies at St. Lucia after umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar changed the ball, the global media reported.

They were assessed five penalty runs although that relatively minor punishment was inconsequential compared to the Sri Lankans´ obvious anger at being accused of what amounts to cheating.

The tourists eventually made a decision to play following lengthy discussions between match referee Javagal Srinath and Sri Lanka's coaching staff.

It appeared for some time that the day's play at least and possibly the rest of the match might be in doubt.

That decision did not bode well with the Sri Lanka players and management, who protested the decision, and players remained off the field for almost the first hour.

Sri Lanka Cricket released a statement saying its players "have not engaged in any wrongdoing" and that the team had taken to the field "under protest".

The Sri Lankan Biard ensured that they "will take all necessary steps to defend any player, in the event any unwarranted allegation is brought against any members of the team".

SLC had however advised the team to take the field to ensure the continuity of the match and the cricket board commended the decision taken by the team to continue with the game "under protest" to ensure the upholding of the spirit of the game.

After it appeared that a resolution had been reached to allow for play on the third day, the Sri Lankans first came onto the field. If there are any, code of conduct charges will follow as per usual at close of play'.

The West Indies resumed on day three on 118-2, which was bumped up to 123/2 by the penalty runs.

By tea, the home side had reached 241-5.

For West Indies, only opener Devon Smith and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich posted scores of substance, 61 and 55 respectively.

It is the second time in two years Sri Lanka have been in controversy over the condition of a ball, after Dasun Shanaka was charged for a similar offence by the ICC in November 2017. He was the player shining the ball and he had bandages on, although that is not uncommon in modern cricket. "But they were informed by SLC to not to forfeit the game", an SLC source told Cricbuzz.

Following their admissions of guilt and an investigation, Steve Smith and David Warner were stripped of the captaincy and vice-captaincy respectively and banned from playing worldwide cricket for 12 months.

Australia captain Smith and his deputy Warner were banned for 12 months while opening batsman Bancroft, the player caught on camera applying sandpaper to the ball, was banned for nine months.
