  • Photo shared by Angela Merkel hints at tension at G7

Merkel's comments come after a weekend of tense diplomacy in Canada, where Trump did not endorse the G7 communique. "We are standing by them, and whoever turns their back on them shows their incoherence and inconsistencies", an aide to Macron said. Highlighting that the document is still "legally-binding" as far as Germany is concerned, Merkel said she would uphold it but her patience after Trump's about-face had worn thin.

Jeremy Corbyn said Donald Trump was to blame for the summit's "failure".

In a statement to MPs on the summit, Mrs May praised Mr Trudeau's "skilful" handling of proceedings and said the leaders had established "common ground" on a range of matters. He said he was unhappy at an end-of-summit press conference by Trudeau after he left the summit, in which Trudeau said Canada would retaliate against US trade tariffs.

Trump appeared to acquiesce to Merkel and other leaders' positions, as the G-7 issued a joint statement to uphold "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" at the end of the two-day summit. "Instead, we act then too", were Merkel's words who used a rather strong language she usually avoids.

Trump ultimately refused to sign on to the communique.

The picture (and many memes) have since gone viral on the internet, and Trump raised it himself at the news conference after he was asked about his relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. But it won't solve the differences, particularly on trade, with the European Union moving toward retaliatory tariffs from July on key USA goods.

"We're going to deal with the unfair trade practices".

May thanked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for organizing the summit.

Trump left Charlevoix before the G-7 summit had concluded in order to attend the bilateral summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
