"Maybe the American president doesn't care about being isolated today, but we don't mind being six, if needs be", Macron added.

"In this environment, above all we always have to stay polite, stay productive and try to convince (them), to keep the United States on board because they are our historical ally and we need them", Macron told a news conference held with Trudeau in Ottawa on Friday.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday evening that Trump will depart the G-7 summit mid-morning on Saturday after a session on women's empowerment.

"Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers", he tweeted. "Look forward to seeing them tomorrow".

While the G7 leaders have largely praised Trump for his efforts to stabilize the Korean peninsula, they are unhappy he pulled out of an agreement created to limit Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Kudlow said Trump would also have a bilateral meeting with Macron at the G7, a gathering that's now widely expected to turn into a group effort in decrying the president's trade tactics to his face and trying to convince him to reverse course.

A few hours later, he added, "Take down your tariffs & barriers or we will more than match you!"

Trump to Meet Trade Advisers Over $70 Billion China Offer
It's not very surprising that the libertarianish Kochs support free trade and oppose trade wars. The trade tariffs are 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum.

Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, was vague Wednesday on the outcome of the summit, saying: "For these kind of decisions, let them meet first". He said the G-7 meeting will appear to be six lined up against one.

But he urged the other industrialized countries to stick together.

Trump took to Twitter later in the evening to blast Trudeau on a range of issue tied to the ongoing trade differences between the two countries, including Trump's imposition of punishing steel and aluminum tariffs and the unresolved North American Free Trade Agreement talks.

Macron threatened to exclude the United States from the joint statement issued every year at the end of the G7 summit, part of an worldwide pushback against Trump efforts to change trade rules.

"Over the last 24 years, we've built a very integrated supply chain, which has been good for economy, good for consumers, good for workers on all sides". Canada, for instance, warned it would hit the USA with almost $17 billion worth of tariffs on goods like toilet paper and maple syrup.

So great is the rift between traditional allies that some observers have suggested renaming the G7 summit the G6+1 - and Macron said they should not hesitate to reach agreements without Trump.

Mr Trump's failure to shake Ms Merkel's hand when he first hosted her in Washington last spring underlined the cooling in relations between the Western world's two most important leaders. Among allies, there was even been speculation that Trump might walk out of the meetings - or even decide not to show up.
