  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov left and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meet in Pyongyang

The US and worldwide press were on the ground to record one of the most significant achievements in the US-North Korea diplomacy. He and Pompeo had discussions over dinner of steak, corn and cheese on Wednesday, Pompeo said in an earlier tweet.

Mattis was speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an global security conference in Singapore.

Trump made the remarks at the White House after his nearly two-hour meeting with a senior official from Pyongyang who delivered a personal letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump. The president had a lengthy meeting yesterday in the Oval Office with one of Kim Jong Un's top deputies.

He said the letter from Mr. Kim, hand-delivered by his right-hand man Kim Yong-chol, was "very nice" and "very interesting", without immediately disclosing its contents.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who has met Kim twice in recent weeks, has lobbied hard for a meeting between Trump and Kim. The adversaries are eying the first summit between the US and North Korea after six decades of hostility.

Washington has said that North Korea's denuclearisation should be a complete and nearly immediate process, while Pyongyang has appeared to put safeguards for the regime's survival as a pre-condition to a process of gradual dismantling, accompanied by a measured lifting of the sanctions.

The pair posed for a photograph in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, with Trump grinning broadly.

Previous attempts at nuclear diplomacy with the North by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush fell apart.

The meeting set for Friday came as a surprise even to some on Trump's staff and he offered few details when he announced it.

Trump has said he wants North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons before sanctions are lifted. "And I told them today, 'Take your time, we can go fast, we can go slowly, ' but I think they'd like to see something happen", he said.

"We are meeting with the Chairman (Kim Jong-un) on June 12 (in Singapore)".

"It's a process", the president said.

Trump tweeted Tuesday that is cancellation letter got a "solid response".

Now that President Trump has declared the meeting back on, after canceling it last week, it's a question that may need to be answered swiftly.

At the dialogue on Saturday, he also expressed his gratitude to Singapore for hosting the summit at short notice, saying the island-state had "taken it all in stride". Trump's on and off summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is on again now for the moment.

Pyongyang and Damascus maintain good relations, and United Nations monitors have accused North Korea of cooperating with Syria on chemical weapons, a charge the North denies.

Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol met at a us government-leased apartment near the United Nations.

The United States, Trump said, was going to ensure the security of Kim Jong-un.

The two will meet in Singapore on June 12, the president said. "But I think you're going to have a very positive result".

KCNA said Kim told Lavrov that he hopes North Korea's issues with the United States - including the state of U.S. That from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Ever since Donald Trump boasted about the historic summit with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, excitement about the meet garnered attention from all over the world.
