The volcano, known to be one of Central America's most active, has destroyed homes and blanketed nearby villages in a cloud of heavy ash.

Hundreds of rescue workers, including firefighters, police and soldiers worked to recover bodies from the still-smoking lava.

"Where we saw the lava fall, we ran to a hillside" to escape, she added.

Morales announced a red alert for Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Sacatepequez, the areas most affected by the eruption, and an orange alert throughout the country.

Rescue operations were suspended until 5 am local time (4.30 pm Indian time) on Sunday because of risky conditions and inclement weather, a spokesman for the municipal firefighters department said.

Volcanic ash covers parked motorcycles, brought by the Fuego Volcano, in Antigua Guatemala. "There are injured, burned and dead people", Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Guatemala's Conred disaster agency, said on radio, according to the Guardian.

Wild animals that escaped German zoo have been found
Friday's great escape comes two years after two lions broke out of their cages at a zoo in Leipzig in eastern Germany . Local authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and call the police if they saw any of the animals .

Volcan de Fuego, whose name means "Volcano of Fire", spewed an 8km (five miles) stream of red-hot lava and belched a thick plume of black smoke and ash that rained onto the capital and other regions.

A disaster authority spokesman said a change in wind direction was to blame for the volcanic ash falling on parts of the capital.

Disaster officials said the eruption has affected more than one million people, with 3,100 evacuated from areas around the volcano and 20 injured people taken to health centers.

Dense ash blasted out by the volcano shut down Guatemala City's global airport, civil aviation said. Two of the dead were children who burnt to death as they watched the eruption from a bridge, officials said.

An ambulance of the volunteer firefighter unit carries the wounded from the village of El Porvenir after the eruption. Streets and houses were covered in the colonial town of Antigua.

Aviation authorities closed the capital's worldwide airport because of the danger posed to planes by the ash.

Tourists can take guided tours up the Volcan de Fuego's neighbour peak to view the frequent volcanic activity.
