Trump Issues Full Pardon for Conservative Activist Dinesh D’Souza

  • PARDON ME Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D'Souza speaks during the final day of the 2014 Republican Leadership Conference

Trump told reporters, per a pool report, that Blagojevich's sentence was excessive and that he had been punished for "saying things that every other politician, you know that many other politicans say".

What do those three people have in common?

Stewart - who had her own "Apprentice" show in 2005, a spinoff of Trump's show - was prosecuted by James Comey when he was the US attorney in Manhattan.

Patrick Fitzgerald, who is now a member of Comey's legal team, served as a U.S. attorney when Blagojevich was arrested in 2008 and said at the time that the then-governor had engaged in "what we can only describe as a political corruption crime spree". She was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home confinement.

Stewart had been prosecuted by former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, whom Trump fired recently. Some have argued that Blagojevich's 14-year prison sentence was disproportionate for to his crimes.

Critics said the president was sending a message to people caught up in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether Trump's 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation, including his longtime private lawyer Michael Cohen, whose business dealings are separately under scrutiny in NY.

He said he is weighing a pardon for Martha Stewart, who served time for conspiracy and lying to federal investigators but has been free for more than a decade. Beneficiaries include controversial Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, who had been convicted of criminal contempt of a court, and Scooter Lobby, a George W Bush White House staffer convicted in 2007 of leaking the identity of an undercover Central Intelligence Agency officer. Fitzgerald, in yet another twist, was appointed as special prosecutor by none other than James Comey.

When he thought of how he would pay for it, Duplantis said he recalled something he said God had told him back in 1978. Louisiana-based televangelist Jesse Duplantis raised eyebrows Tuesday when he said God told him he needs a new jet.

Stewart once hosted a spin-off version of Trump's reality TV show "The Apprentice" while Trump noted that Blagojevich - a Democrat - had appeared on the celebrity version of the show. D'Souza recalled that Obama was "raging" about the movie. "The career prosecutors and agents did their job", he said.

D'Souza, a best-selling author, made a name for himself as a documentary filmmaker attacking former President Barack Obama. The president explained that he believed D'Souza had been treated unfairly by the justice system.

He retweeted Trump's tweet about the forthcoming pardon, but did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment sent to his media company, D'Souza Media.

James Robenalt, a lawyer at the firm Thompson Hine, said the D'Souza pardon is largely symbolic for subjects of Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

"Dinesh D'Souza attempted to illegally contribute over $10,000 to a Senate campaign, willfully undermining the integrity of the campaign finance process", wrote Preet Bharara, at the time a U.S. attorney in Manhattan, describing D'Souza's alleged scheme to use straw donors to make contributions to Republican U.S. Senate candidate Wendy Long in 2012.

Trump's remarks came just hours after he announced that he would pardon conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza. Arpaio was awaiting sentencing after he was convicted of criminal contempt of court for disobeying a federal judge's order to stop immigration patrols that focused on Latinos. The students had lost 17 classmates and teachers in a shooting that month.

His tweets about the Parkland students have been sharply criticized by some Florida Republicans, including Gov. Rick Scott.
